5 Croydon Restaurants That No ISLAND Resident Should Overlook

by Liz Seyi Digital marketing manager

Croydon may not be one of London’s more obvious gastronomic capitals, but the situation is changing fast amid the continued regeneration of this for-too-long unsung borough.

Here are just some of the local restaurants that anyone looking for a House For Sale In Croydon – such as any of the currently available ISLAND penthouses or apartments – should experience, and what other people have been saying about them.

Thanh’s Bistro

This tiny Vietnamese restaurant may be the definition of unassuming from the outside, but you are guaranteed to receive a friendly welcome and the opportunity to tuck into truly authentic food.

At the time of typing, the bistro is the highest-ranked of 400 Croydon restaurants on TripAdvisor, with one recent reviewer commenting: “This sweet little restaurant does the best summer rolls I have ever had. The staff are always lovely... my partner and I love this place, so do most of my friends.” You’ll find it at 56 Lower Addiscombe Road.

Yaalu Yalu

This Sri Lankan-inspired Asian fusion restaurant opened its doors at 164 Addington Road in 2015, and doesn’t disappoint with its mains menu serving up the likes of Soy Soy, Malwana, Ornamented Lagoon, Fisherman’s Heart and Yours Truly Lamprais.

It’s the perfect place to come for intriguing traditional, modern and street food, moving one reviewer to remark: “This is one of our favourite restaurants, our only regret is that we only get to visit it when we are in London.”

McDermott’s

You can’t possibly be a resident of ISLAND without taking the opportunity to experience a true Croydon institution – and one of the great all-time British dishes, done the best possible way. Yes, that’s right: we’re talking about fish and chips at McDermott’s in the Forestdale Shopping Centre.

The restaurant and takeaway is situated on Featherbed Lane, and its sustained popularity since Tony McDermott started the business in 1987 is shown by reviews like this one: “I’ve eaten fish and chips in Whitby and Cornwall and Sydney in celebrated places. They aren’t as good as McDermott’s.”

Bagattis

Bagattis is locatedat 56-58 South End, in the restaurant quarter of South Croydon. For almost three decades, it has cultivated a reputation for exceptional Italian cuisine, prepared from the freshest ingredients and complemented by an impressive selection of premium wines.

As one recent TripAdvisor stated of this familiar Croydon favourite: “[I] highly recommend for food, service, menu choice and value for money. I’m yet to find a better restaurant in Croydon.”

Cadillac Diner

When you fancy doing it as they do in the States at a colourful diner-style restaurant serving all of the usual authentic American food such as hot dogs, burgers and wings, we really don’t think you can do better than the family-friendly Cadillac Diner.

One of the restaurant’s recent online reviewers declared it to be “like a nicer version of TGI Fridays”, having proclaimed that “my bacon burger was the tastiest I’d had in a long time.” You can determine whether you agree by paying your own visit to the diner on 147 Wickham Road.
