4 Ways to Make Your Loved One’s House Safer

by Kevin Smith Author

Most people in their golden years would prefer to stay in the comfort of their own homes rather than be forced to live in an assisted living facility. However, there comes a point where a retirement community isn’t exactly necessary, but living independently may show some risks. Thankfully, there are a few ways to create a safer environment for your loved one without having to pressure them into moving into a different home. For instance, covering steps with ramps or installing a walk-in tub and shower combo can remove a lot of danger for them. Here are four major features to help create a safe and happy home.

 A Mobile Alert System

Despite our age of cell phones and constant communication, it’s still important to have some sort of device handy that can immediately call for medical assistance or alert you that they need your help. There are plenty of devices like this out on the market that are easy to use as well as being incredibly effective. Knowing that they can press a button and be tended to immediately can be a huge relief to you and your family.

 Proper Lighting

It’s vital to make sure your elderly relative has the proper lighting to navigate around their home at any time of day. Many accidents or falls can happen when it’s too dark or when they’re searching for a light switch in a dim room. Having the lighting in the home connected to a clap or vocal command is very helpful for those on the move throughout the night.

 Remove Rugs

This is a simple way to make sure there are no obstacles around the home. Any rugs that aren’t tacked down should be removed. These throw or scatter rugs can bunch up and can easily cause a trip and fall. Be sure to check the entire home for loose accessories like this that could be dangerous.

 Install Walk-In Tub

Bathrooms can be one of the most dangerous rooms in the home. Slippery tiles and tubs can be very difficult to manage if your loved one isn’t as agile as they used to be. Be sure to place grab handles all around the bathroom for easier movement. Also, a walk-in tub and shower combo allows them to be able to move in and out of the stall safely and comfortably. These sort of additions to the home will make a huge difference in their ability to live alone.
