4 Lesser-Known Facts about Honed Natural Stone

by Sarah B. Marketing Writer | Thinker | Environmentalist

Natural stones are available in a wide range of surface finishes. The very purpose of the finish is to give the stone a unique texture and appearance.

Some finishes or surface treatments change the behavior of the stone as well. For example: polished finish enhances the shine of the stone tile and slab.

Honed Natural Stone

Honed is a kind of finish or treatment given to the stone. Technically, all natural stones can have this surface finish. Some manmade materials such as ceramic tile, porcelain tiles, and luxury vinyl tiles can also have this finish.

Honed is a low-sheen finish. Meaning, hone stone is not as shiny as polished stone.

Apparently, because of polished finish, natural stone floors become dangerously slipper when wet. However, this is not the case with honed stone tiles. They can be used even in wet areas such as for flooring in bathroom and laundry room.

Hone Natural Stone Facts –

1. Matte Like Surface: Hone stone has a matte, silk-like appearance. It feels soft and delicate, yet it is hard and highly durable.

2. Water Resistant – Honed stone tiles have their surfaced honed and polished. The pores on them are honed and blocked. As a result, they become resistant to water. That means, they can be used in wet areas without any concerns of moisture or water damage.

3. Slip Resistant – These stones are not perfectly smooth. They are smoother than stone just cut into slabs or tiles. Since not very smooth, they have a less slippery surface, which is a highly desirable thing in modern bathrooms and kitchens.

4. Need More Care than Polished Stones – Polished stone tiles and slabs have a strong and rigid polish applied on their surface. This coating protects the stone from a number of factors such as stains and scratches. But honed stone tiles are quite able to protect themselves from these factors. You will need to protect them from these factors.
