3 Intrinsic Elements That Define Traditional Native American Art

by Mamiya Jewellers Jewelry store in Dubai

For thousands of years, art has been an important form of expression for Native American communities. It has been used as a symbol of their heritage. Beginning with cave drawings and carvings, the traditional Native American art has evolved to include intricate artworks such as jewelry-making, pottery, weaving, painting, doll making, basketry, and much more. While it has become increasingly difficult to find old specimens of Native American artworks, many new artists are trying to keep the traditions alive by adopting the traditional art into more modern forms, as is evident in products such as Diamond Pendants in Dubai.

Traditionally, there were three elements that played an important role in the creation of any kind of Native American artwork. Here they are:

The Role Of The Artist

While the role of a Native American artist was no different from an artist in another culture, which was to arouse a sensational or emotional response from the audience, the strict traditions of Native American culture did not lend them much scope for experimentation. Although, even while using familiar mediums or techniques, they were, through their creativity, able to bring about significant changes in the traditional styles and develop designs or patterns that were unique to their tribe and culture and become symbols for their authentic Turquoise jewelry.

The Origin Story

The origins of most Native American art forms are lost in obscurity. While some were influenced by the natural elements, some were simple images of one-dimensional figures and shapes. Additionally, Native American art has had so much external influence from Colonialism and the European traditions that it is difficult to figure out the exact sources of a lot of concepts. Creations by some artists are also results of their interaction with a “guardian spirit,” which is known as a “vision quest.” It is a state in which the artist enters a spiritual realm that is devoid of worldly beings or objects. The patterns or designs that they encounter in that state are recreated in their works.

Function Of Art

While some Native American art objects are mere utilitarian items, some are a reflection of the social structure and cultural organization. Some of the best artistic creations were often reserved for religious ceremonies, such as the sandpaintings by the Navajos.
