Most wanted Osama T-shirt slogans?

by Belinha Fernandes Plastic artist

That’s right, I had to Google it because I had just an idea of a T-shirt with a kind of red heart on it. Do you remember Vivienne Westwood’s collection of T-shirts for human rights organization Liberty? It was created in response to the British government's anti-terror laws, on 2005 in London, England. Liberty was-is?-a group aimed to defend civil rights and at the time they were protesting against Government’s new anti-terror laws."I am not a terrorist, please don't arrest me". This was the T-shirt slogan. Government was defending the creation of a law that could allow three month’s detention without charge.

What’s exactly the power of a t-shirt slogan? Clearly t-shirts slogans can make a difference. A tee is a cotton canvas with feet. You wear it and the message travels with you and gets to be seen by others. Want to generate some publicity to your store? Get a t-shirt made. Want to get public awareness around an idea? Get a t-shirt screen-printed. You state your support to a cause, a trend, a political view wearing that simple tee. Depending on whom you are the reaction to what content you’re wearing can go from ignored to outrage. You match that with a particular time and space and sometimes the bomb goes off.

I had always resisted slogan t-shirts, wearing a slogan across my chest was never on my fashion top preferences. Wearing a slogan on my back is another viable option that I never tried also. But I do love t-shirts and have a lot of different ones.

So, here I was when I saw this Tweet of someone surprised about the most fresh t-shirts on the marketplace. I clicked the link just to find out that lots of people are designing tees with slogans like these: Rest in hell Osama Bin Laden, Obama got Osama, We got you Osama Bin Laden, Yes we did- 05.01.2011, Hide and seek World Champion, 09.11. 2001 – 05.01.2011, Obama killed Osama, etc, etc.

Look, I’m aware of what the man did, he proclamed Americans as enemies; I know that USA – and many countries of the world, including mine - wanted Osama captured. London and Madrid were hit too. Europeans also wanted Osama caught and brought to Justice, yes, maybe not just summary executed.Yes, I remember watching TV on 11th September and hardly believing what was going on. And, yes, year after year I’ve been watching anniversary documentaries on the tragic day because it’s hard to ignore such brutal memory, every year I feel like I have to do something to honor those who lost their lives. Even if I did not lose anyone at the Twin Towers I am deeply sorry for those who did. But all those t-shirts side by side on the marketplace just looked like a wall of hate.

Nothing good comes from hate. Are these T-shirts celebrating what? Justice?! What are you doing here? Aren’t we just perpetuating the circle of hate?  It’s a “pescadinha de rabo na boca”.  This is a Portuguese expression about a fish that’s fried with its tale on its mouth. So Osama made a hideous hit on the occidental world, we successful shot Osama down, Osama’s followers will hit on us again, sooner or later, and so on and on and the war against terrorism will never end. That was my reading of all those tee-shirt slogans side by side on my PC screen. It made me sad and it made me fear for the future. If t-shirt slogan can change the world, then it’s time we create some powerful slogans for Peace because the world needs it.

Thanks Joseph and LvJie for feedback. Two very different worlds have been fighting since the beginning of times. We faught the islamic world they faught us too. The background was religious but many other factors influenced, political, territorial, economical.Intolerance seems to be a successful human brand. What I find more disturbing is that we can't learn from the past. The story keeps repeating.Hate celebrations between these two different worlds that I sometimes watch on the TV are a shame to mankind. If there is a God watching from above He can't be pleased with either factions. We are year-lights away from a culture of Peace.

Belinha,

Hats off to you! This is a great article, the world needs to wake up and realize we are destroying ourselves and this planet. Too many wars are fought in the name of religion and politics. It does make one fear for the future. Thank you for this article, and yes i believe Tee's are a good way to publicize and spread the word.
