You had WHAT for breakfast ?!?!

by Theresa
They say breakfast is the most important meal of the day and that you are what you eat .... so what did you have this morning?

I tend to eat a lot at breakfast *blush* as I simply LOVE breakfast foods. Today, I had a pancake (glutenfree)* with peanut butter and homemade apple butter*, a banana and a strawberry flavor o'soy yogurt a few hours later - mmmmm mmm -- all organic/natural and all DELICIOUS!

I was discussing this very thing with a friend of mine the other day and was floored at what she and her family ate for breakfast... it was a bit disgusting to me actually. LOL - but to each his own ! I love her dearly and am not judging her for her breakfast choices, but was a bit taken aback really as she is a very healthy person. She tells me they have no time for breaky and so grab whatever is available.. this particular morning it was powdered doughnuts - for breakfast!! I guess I always thought of them as a snack, not a meal. She told me I didn't know what I was missing and that they are to DIE for. So, I just had to look online to see what these KrispyKreme doughnuts were all about...

I was amazed that the amount of sugar (carbs), fat, salt and calories one of these things contains:

calories (kcal) 260
carbohydrates (g) 33
fiber (g) 0
protein (g) 3
fat (g) 13
calories from fat (%) 45
saturated fat (g) 3
cholesterol (mg) 20
sodium (mg) 320
total weight (g) 66

Of course the sugar is not mentioned here, nor the ingredients as I can only imagine why. (Yep, I guess she is right, they are to "DIE for" - yikes!) I am always surprised by the culture we live in, where we no longer care about what foods do to us as long as it tastes good. Surprisingly, I find that the good ol' natural food tastes better, but I may just be an odd duck in a huge pond.

Anyway, after talking with my friend, I thought I would satisfy my curiosity and see what you all think... What did you have and why?

Oh P.S.  After our little chat, I am currently making my friend some good breakfast bars that she can take on the run and some other instant breakfast recipes and ideas -  She loves it :-)

As with most nocturnal folks, my diet can seem a little strange especially when it comes to that meal the others refer to as Breakfast...

I like salads made of fruits and vegetables and steaks for breakfast... I'll even eat whole raw fruits and veggies for a quick breakfast, rather that bomb myself with those sugar pellets...

I do like sweets from time to time, and some well made chocolate pancakes with peanut butter and honey, make a good lunch for me... but for breakfast this type of meal would be a mistake-- The Fast Burning carbs could drop you like a stone at mid-morning and even make you go grab a more devastating sugar bomb, because you need a pick-me-up...

Now, I don't recommend Sushi and Sashimi for eveyone but these are perfect for breakfast.

They'll provide long lasting energies and fiber in a form that the body loves to digest! Raw beef and fresh eggs will do the same thing. Care to join me? LOL! :)

Breakfast for me is like a treat or something.

I normally don't eat breakfast at all Coffee and a smoke is the usual ( I don't want to hear it) (blah blah blah) LOL

When we are out or traveling then we have breakfast

Hubby has bacon and eggs, home fries and toast and coffee.
Myself I vary from the same as above too Belgium waffles (love them with whipped cream and strawberries, or french toast, or omelet or plain toast

Steak is out (puke) for breakfast. Sausage is too unless I have pancakes.

Lunch is salad (my fav food)

I'll join you if you cook I'll clean up LOL

I too love fruits and veggies for breakfasts, but sushi and sashimi is not something I could do in the morning LOL -- eggs are much more lovely. I also tend to do a lot of egg scrambles or rice for breakfast with lots of veggies with a side of yogurt and fresh fruits for mid morning.

Even though my pancakes have no wheat flour and I don't use syrup or sugar, they are still carbs. So, the yogurt is my saving grace at mid morning - LOL!

Your breakfasts sound a bit more interesting and fun ! Thanks for sharing!

Since I work during the middle of the night, when I get home I HAVE TO EAT something, but knowing I'll be going back to bed for a few more hours, I really watch my intake. I'll have key lime yogurt and toast with oleo (I hate real butter). If I have bananas or grapes on hand I might have fresh fruit and my key lime yogurt.

Yep Breakfast is very important indeed and helps to start the day off well if you choose a good one. I live in England and breakfast varies from family to family and a good old english fry up is often what people enjoy but certainly all that fried stuff is extremely bad for your arteries. I once used to eat like that but not for the last 15 years. Now my breakfast is usually
Cereal like muesli, cornflakes or porridge oats with a little skimmed milk and often whatever fruit i have around. Later I often eat a soya yogurt or a slice of wholemeal toast with sugar free jam :)
On the odd occasion I have scramled eggs instead as i enjoy a savoury breakfast too

Breakfast? That's the meal where I have a couple of small portions
of cereal, but only as an excuse for drinking a bowl of cold milk. :-)
Oh yes, and a cup of tea.

Occasionally, when we're away, I might even add a couple of slices
of toast and some fruit juice.

I have to say, that what you had for breakfast is way better then a donut. I am trying to change the way I eat. And eat more oragnicly. I really haven't gotten to far with it yet. I live by myself and I usually eat fosted min wheats or an egg. The eggs are fresh from the farm though.

oh Rebecca!
Farm fresh eggs are the best, especially if they are free range. I do a lot of egg scrambles for breakfast. I tend to enjoy my eggs made with a variety of things, sometimes with fresh tomatoes, onion, peppers, and topped with soy cheese. YUM!! Sometimes I opt for a Tablespoon or two of Salsa, instead of all the diced veggies. Other times, it is simply a veggie fest with zucchini, mushrooms, olives, and whatever else I happen to think of -- creativity works wonderfully for these quick nutritious egg breakfasts.....I used to take these scrambles and wrap them up in a whole grain tortilla for the "on the run" mornings. Mmmmm mmmmm!

I know this will sound strange but often breakfast is leftover dinner. I just eat whatever I like. The again sometimes dinner is bowl of cereal.

However when I have time I go the whole bad for you route. Not that often though, Country ham, scrambled eggs with cheddar cheese. Homemade yeast rolls and a side of fried apples!

And you're all welcome for me sending your cholesterol levels up a point or two! :-)
