10 commandments to choose a good photographer

by TM Maria Be a king in your own kingdom

Capturing the most beautiful emotions of a wedding day is a real art. It is a skill that requires talent and experience. Think again, a very good portrait or travel photographer will not necessarily be a good wedding photographer. How to choose the one to whom you entrust this heavy task of the creator of memories?

Here are our answers in 10 commandments

Choose a photographer passionate about marriage

Choose a photographer who is passionate about weddings and has solid experience in the field. It will be more able to translate the emotion of the day. Effectively it is a sector which has its specificities and it is important that the professional knows them at the end of the fingers. Ask to see his portfolio and at least a whole report to judge the quality of the "less successful" photos he has not put on his website.

Pay attention to his style

There are several styles of engagement photographs. Determine what your expectations are: are you a photo essay, vintage photos, artistic or lifestyle photos? Observe each photographer's personal touch to help you select the ones that are closest to what you are looking for and what is affecting you.

Opt for a precise photographer

Avoid photo studios that collaborate with several photographers. Generally, you will not know in advance which one will be allotted to you for D-Day. Unless you like games of chance..

Read the contract

Read carefully the contract that the photographer offers you. Pay special attention to his work schedule (possibly the cost of overtime) and the number of retouched photos he will deliver. Will they be in color or black & white (or both)? Will you have access to an online gallery with downloadable photos in high definition? On which support will they be delivered (USB, DVD, transfer ...)? What are the costs of travel, accommodation and possibly the expenses of mouth?

Make sure of Plan B

No one is immune to an illness or accident. Ask the photographer if he has a backup solution in case he is unable to attend your wedding. This eventuality should be detailed in the contract. If you use a wedding planner, ask for her opinion, with her experience she can advise you.

Do you care about his equipment?

Ask the photographer if he has any spare equipment in case of a breakdown. Like any electronic device, even professional cameras can fail. Does it take a body, lenses, external flashes and extra batteries?

Ask him if he knows your place of marriage

A photographer who already knows your wedding venue is a real benefit. He will better apprehend the different angles of view and will be better able to appropriate spaces and their luminosity. After that is a plus, but that should not be decisive for your choice either. A true professional will also adapt to any situation.

Ask for additional services

A photographer can offer optional (or in the package) services such as developing photos, the constitution of a photo album, a photo animation on the day or a broadcast to the evening photos taken during the day. If you are looking for these benefits, it may be more advantageous to go through the same professional.

Discuss the payment

Once you opt for one of the packages he offers, find out about payment terms. Is there a deposit? Is it possible to stagger the payment? What are the cancellation terms in case your wedding would have to be postponed for X or Y reason?

Pay special attention to the feeling

The photographer will follow you throughout the most beautiful day of your life. He will attend very intimate moments. In order for the photos to be successful, you must also be comfortable in his presence. For him too, it is important that he is on the same wavelength as you. This criterion should therefore be taken into account in your final decision.
