The Real Cost of Wordpress

It's still amazing how many free blogs I see running links that will eventually get them shut down. It made me think about what the real cost is for one of my many self-hosted Wordpress blogs compared to the downside of using a free one.

If you have several domains like I do, the hosting cost works out to about $1 a month and another $1 a month to register the domain name. That can be reduced even further with the creative use of subdomains. There are free themes and plugins all over, so there is really no further expense involved that I can think of.

Now consider the real cost of a free blog. Most important in my opinion is you label yourself and a free blog user that probably is not making any money from the stuff you are trying to push on me. Then if you do get shut down, all the work you put in is lost unless you are among the one in a million that have backups.

Considering all this, I think a couple bucks a month for my own blog that I control is cheap!

hehe, agree, but, maybe you can try with wordpress free blogs? They'll probably not shut down. But yes, they probably don't allow adverts /or plugins for ads and similar.....

I have a free Wordpress site and they SUCK. You can't do half of what you can with a self-hosted Wordpress, just so you can save a couple of bucks? They do shut them down too, just try advertising referral links on them for long.

Even you have your own blogs there are some reasons to use the free blogs. SEO is one reason. Setting up some blogs on free blog sites you can get relevant backlinks for your website.

@enam I challenge you to show me. I'm not saying what you say is not true, but give us an example in real life. If I can get 100 backlinks in about 5 minutes without a free blog that produced a #1 Google result for the keyword Fusioncash Referral Secret, what's the advantage?

Hi all, I'm new here and found this thread very interesting.

@Oldbuddy: How can one get 100 (quality) backlinks in 5 minutes? I wonder b/c Google just updated its algorithm a few weeks ago, and I think it's much tougher now on the quality of a site's backlinks.

I just wrote a blog post last night about this new Google screening system, called "Panda." I'm not sure of exactly how they calculate link quality, but a lot of high-profile sites lost visibility in the SERPs when Panda kicked in.

My point: I want links, but I'm now afraid of them! :-)

I have been installing and setting up wordpress blogs for a couple of months now, and I must agree with your opinion of the free wordpress version. But, if a free account is used, it is very important to follow the rules! Free is ok to start out with, but to host your own, is so much better, in so many ways!

Awesome discussion, guys. Good points from marS, Warren ( Oldbuddy ), enam, viqifrench, Kat.

I myself have a Blogger blog and a free WP blog but I never post there. I prefer branding myself with my own domains.
