There is an obvious question that you will need to ask yourself in order to help you make a decision regarding the appropriate cycle bag to buy, and that is 'what do I want to carry?'. If you only want to carry a thin waterproof cover in case it rains or something equally small, then a small Saddle Bag which fits to your saddle post and rails should be adequate. In fact, you can get saddle bags that are big enough to carry a weekend away kit if you limit what you want to take. One thing to look for with saddle bags is whether or not you need to ensure it is waterproof, especially if you don't have mud guards fitted to your bike. Saddle bags are by far the most popular type of cycling bag and you can normally find one suitable for your needs.

If you are going on a relatively short journey then a cycling specific rucksack maybe the job. There are a number of things you want to look out for with a rucksack to make it as comfortable as possible to use. For example, it should have a ventilated back and should have a waist strap as well as shoulder straps. You may even want to look for one that has a drinks bladder incorporated so that you can have a drink on the move. You should be aware though that no matter how comfortable a rucksack you buy, it will eventually take its toll and so for longer journeys a bag that fits to the bike is usually more desirable. One think a cycling specific rucksack will give you though is better control over the bike if you are intending to go on a fairly technical off road ride etc.

Another type of bag which is really designed for longer journeys and is normally used to carry the most stuff is the panier. Usually used in pairs to distribute the weight evenly, the panier fits to the side of the bike. Its capacity is measured in litres and you can usually get paniers to carry pretty much everything you need to carry, even if you are going on a cycling holiday for a number of weeks.

A variant of the pannier is the front pannier or 'low rider'. These are specially designed paniers that fit to the front of the bike and can be used singularly as they won't affect your balance the same way as a single side panier would.

Finally, you might want to go for a handlebar bag. These are really handy for things you might want to get to while you are riding, such as a camera for example. These types of bags will sometimes come with a clear panel in the top so that you can have a map to look at without stopping every five minutes.
