Questions

What is an organic search result?

Asked by Oller Juriya, in Internet & eBusiness
These are the unpaid list items showed by a Search Engine because of a question by a searcher. Known as the SERPs (Search Engine Results Page). You'll see them simply under the paid outcomes at the head of the page.

4 reasons why organic is still important
1. Still organic rocks
Although it may have changed slightly since BrightEdge published its report last year, the data still appears to be true. Organic is simply better for generating relevant traffic. The only channel that performs better in some capacities is paid search ads, but that's just for conversions, not overall traffic delivery (paid search only accounted for 10 percent of total traffic).

However, we found that by combining channels we can outperform any channel on its own.

BrightEdge research supports that a mixed approach is best for delivering high-performing content. The combination of organic and paid search will not only increase website traffic, it will also deliver a higher return on investment. Take the retail, tech, and hospitality industries for example: organic and paid search combined account for more than two-thirds of your total revenue.

So if you are neglecting your organic listings, your payment is not doing as well as it could either. You're leaving money on the table in both organic and paid searches.

2. No control
When auditing sites, we often see that the customer gets between 40 and 60 percent of their traffic from Facebook. This traffic sends your visitors through the stratosphere. However, their traffic on Google is low, one of the lowest we have seen for sites of this type (usually publishers).

When I see this, my brain hurts a little. Yes, the love affair with Facebook traffic is very real and it happens for good reason. A site that sends you millions of visitors through a single referral source is a marketer's dream come true. Well ... it is until it isn't.

Walled gardens have their own rules

With Facebook (or any social media site), you are working within a closed system, a walled garden. This means that while your section may be in bloom, you have no control over how that garden is fed or watered.

What if Facebook decides that you can no longer show off that garden of yours? What if Twitter decides to customize the feed? What happens if Pinterest cuts your affiliate links? These questions are very real because they have all happened or are in process.

When you use social media platforms for your site traffic, you are at the mercy of that platform. If Facebook cuts the organic display, you have to pay. If Twitter decides to segment the algorithm, how do they see you? And if Pinterest removes all affiliate links, how do you replace that traffic?

When you have no control over the environment that generates your revenue, you can end up with a hefty advertising bill to generate traffic that is lost when the business changes the way the platform displays its content. These changes generally occur overnight or over a few weeks. It is not a long time to adapt, especially for large companies.

But Google does this too, right?

Well yes and no. Sure, you can get hit with an algorithm change or a penalty that destroys all your traffic. However, if you have good people who know what they are doing, this is unlikely to happen, and if it does, it is easy (in most cases) to get your visits back. Panda and Penguin are another story, but if they hit you, it is usually not accidental.

So while you may need to increase your advertising investment to help replace traffic while you fix your problems, problems can be fixed and traffic can be returned. In most cases, it won't replace it forever. (Again, Penguin and Panda are the exceptions due to the long time between updates.)

3. "Stickiness" of the site
Social media and paid ads can drive traffic, but they're not long-term customer creators. Bounce rates are high, and in my experience the number of pages visited is usually very low.

Of course, this makes perfect sense. If I come from my Facebook feed, I will probably see a page and leave. What we see is that these site visitors generally see between 1.2 and 2 pages.

Facebook is meant to drive article views, not overall site traffic and customer loyalty. Twitter is meant to promote customer loyalty, not to create post traffic. Pinterest users hardly leave the site unless you're selling something. In that case, the paid ads offer the user a reason to visit it,

A free listing in Google Search that appears because it's relevant to someone's search terms. Non-organic search results are paid advertisements. The ads to the right of organic results have an “Ads” box above them.
