The separation of soul and body is not painful. The body often suffers more during life than at the moment of death, the soul has nothing to do with it. The sufferings one sometimes experiences at the moment of death are a "pleasure for the mind," which sees the end of his exile come to an end.

May your heart not be troubled. Put your faith in God, put your faith in me too. There are many mansions in my Father's house. If not, would I have said that I will prepare a place for you? So if I go and prepare a place for you, I come back to take you near me, so that where I am, you are, you too.

It is big question that needs an elaborate answer. You have to read the following Hindu scriptures..
1. Kada Upanishad
2. Bhagavad Gita
3. Karuda Purana

The separation of soul and body is not painful. The body often suffers more during life than at the moment of death, the soul has nothing to do with it. The sufferings that one sometimes experiences at the moment of death are a "pleasure for the spirit" which sees the end of his exile come to an end.
In natural death, that which occurs by the exhaustion of the organs as a result of the age, the man leaves the life without noticing it. It is a lamp that goes out for lack of food. The separation of soul and body is not instantaneous. The soul is gradually emerging. During life, the mind is attached to the body by its semi-material envelope or perisprit. Death is the destruction of the body alone and not of the perisprit. Observation shows that at the moment of death the liberation of the perisprit is not suddenly complete; it takes place only gradually and with a very variable slowness according to the individuals. In some, it is quick enough and it can be said that the moment of death is that of deliverance within a few hours. But in others, especially those whose lives have been all material and sensual, the release is much longer and sometimes lasts for months. It is rational to conceive that the more identified with matter, the more difficult it is to separate from it. While the intellectual and moral activity, the elevation of the thoughts operates a beginning of release, even during the life of the body and when death arrives, it is almost instantaneous.
In agony, the soul has already sometimes left the body, there is only organic life. Man is no longer conscious of himself. The body is a machine that the heart makes move, it exists as long as the heart circulates the blood in the veins and does not need the soul for that.
The soul leaving the body remains for some time in trouble.
At the moment of death everything is confused at first, it takes some time for the soul to recognize itself, it is as dizzy and in the state of a man emerging from a deep sleep and who seeks to realize of his situation.
The lucidity of ideas and the memory of the past come back to him as the influence of the material from which it has just been released disappears and the fog that obscures his thoughts dissipates. The duration of the disorder following death is very variable, the release lasts from a few hours (very evolved beings) to several months, years.
This disorder presents particular circumstances according to the character of the individuals and especially according to the type of death. In the violent deaths by suicide or accident etc ..., the mind is surprised, astonished and does not believe to be dead, it supports it with obstinacy, nevertheless it sees his body, he knows that this body is his and he does not understand let him be separated. He goes to the people he loves; speak to them and do not understand why they do not hear it. This illusion lasts until the total liberation of the perispirit, only then does the mind recognize itself and understand that it is no longer part of the living.
The trouble that follows death is not painful for the good man. He is calm and in all likeness to the one who accompanies a peaceful awakening.
For one whose conscience is not mature, he is full of anxiety and anguish that increases as he recognizes himself.

Nobody knows about the soul, what next after death? I have heard so many times that god takes the soul into the heaven or hell according to that soul's karma.

The soul returns [to death] to the God who gave it ”in the sense that only God who gave the soul - or life force - at first is able to return it after it comes out of man, meaning that any hope for that person for a future life is entirely dependent on God.

Life is not always easy. Everyone one day when the other is at the lowest. But even so, life is not a punishment. The fate you have in life was not predestined as a punishment for past lives. That's not how it works.
