What do I say to this friend?

Just simply tell her happy birthday. Don't bring such a hard thing up on this day. I'm sure she has enough on her mind.

As for when I phoned her, I kindofa did what you suggested.... she insisted it was the call that 'made her day' and hey, she's always been quite a laid back type of person, never showing much stress etc...
