Your Health After a Pandemic

by Rob J. Quality Links

Your health is always important, but recent events have people eyeing their overall health and potential symptoms more closely than they would otherwise. Paradoxical as it may sound, in a pandemic it is important to self manage as much of your health as you can. Medical facilities are being preserved for Covid healthcare and emergencies. Below you’ll find some things to keep in mind when getting medical care during and after a pandemic.

Emergency Care

As aforementioned, hospitals are being preserved for severe Covid patients and emergencies. If you find that you would like medical attention, but are not in an emergency, it is your safest option to manage the situation yourself. If you believe you need emergent care, but do not find it so serious that you need to call 911, it may be a good idea to contact an urgent care center. Urgent care centers have doctors and nurse practitioners and are equipped to care for small emergencies that patients may be experiencing.

Family Medicine

Family medicine doctors are likely to offer telemedicine to their patients. This simply means that they meet and confer with their patients on a video call and assess any needs they may have. Since Family Medicine doctors can assist with both physical and mental care, it is good to check in with a Family Medicine doctor throughout a pandemic. They can suggest resources and will be able to notice any unhealthy changes their patients may be experiencing. They can also help you determine if going to a hospital is worth the risk.

Mental Wellness

During a pandemic, looking after your mental health can be difficult. There are several resources for people to connect with licensed therapists via phone or video call. Not only can these be helpful during social distancing, they can also be less expensive than in-person visits. Looking after your mental health is extremely useful, even when we are not experiencing a pandemic. If you find the mental health visits helpful, it is likely best to continue them.

Post-Covid Healthcare

When discussing post-covid healthcare, it is important to understand your own pre-existing conditions. Any conditions that you were aware of prior to the pandemic, should have been monitored throughout the pandemic and should be assessed by a Family Medicine doctor after the pandemic. If no pre-existing conditions exist, then it is important to get a general check-up to make sure that you are still in good health.
