by Lucy Petterson The Mindful Dentist in London
Blessed are the people who have a naturally beautiful smile. And if you are not one of them, don’t feel alone, nearly half the world is with you. Misplaced and misaligned teeth and jaws are the most common reason why people miss out on that all winning smile. But don’t worry, medical science and surgery have come a long way. There are hardly any things that cannot be corrected using advanced medical procedures. Your smile is no exception. There are specialized people called dentists and orthodontists to help you get that beautiful smile you always wanted.

What is Orthodontics and how is an orthodontist different from your well-known dentist?

As a general rule, every time one has a dental issue, we rush to a dentist. So who is an orthodontist and when should we be looking for one? Dentistry encompasses a wide spectrum of studies which includes the betterment and overall care of your oral health. This would include regular cleaning, whitening, implants, root canals and much more. But Orthodontics is a specialized branch within dentistry dealing with the diagnosis and treatment of misaligned or crooked teeth, poorly aligned jaws, improving bad bites, and other things which will improve your facial features and smile. Orthodontics is a treatment provided by Orthodontist.

When and who should meet an orthodontist?

One needs to know when to meet a dentist and when it is time to speak to an orthodontist. Here are some pointers to help you decide if it is time for you to meet an Orthodontist.

Protruding teeth: Protruding frontal teeth is one of the most common dental problem faced by many, including kids. It makes you look odd and sometimes unattractive. But the good news is it can be easily corrected using braces, archwires, etc.

Dental Crowding: This is a condition where the jawline is small and/or the teeth are bigger and it becomes difficult to adjust all the teeth. Treatment options include increasing size of the jaws, reducing the size of the teeth or reducing the number of teeth.

Misaligned Teeth: Teeth misalignment causes uneven jaw. Crooked teeth may not allow your jaw to settle in its correct position. Braces or retainers can help correct this.

Malocclusion: A malocclusion is a misalignment of the teeth and the bite. The most common cause of Malocclusion is when the size of the jaw is too small compared to the size of the teeth. Treatments include applying braces and repair of irregular teeth.

What Are Dental Implant and How Do They Work?

Dental implants are a popular method and effective way to replace the missing teeth. Dental implants are surgically placed small titanium posts (like screws) in your jawbone, where they act as the roots of your missing teeth. This implants will be capped with a crown that will work like your natural tooth.

Dental implants consist of 3 parts. The first one is an implant post or screw that is inserted in the jawbone. The second is a screw that protrudes above the gum line or abutment attached to the implant post. The third is the final tooth restoration that covers up the abutment.  The screw bonds the jawbone during a process called Osseointegration. New bone cells begin to grow on this implant post and help in holding the post firmly in place, not letting it move. This bonding process ensures the implant post is sturdy to hold the replacement tooth. Dental implants could be used to support bridges, implant crowns or complete dentures.

Why Are Dental Implants Betterlondon Than Other Alternatives?

The primary reason why dental implants are better than other alternatives is the way the implant post artificially replaces the root of a tooth. The natural teeth roots are vital for good dental health. Each time one bites down on a tooth, the crown of the tooth transmits the sensation to the tooth root and to the surrounding bone. This stimulates the bone, and any old bone cells are continually replaced.

Secondly, dental implants protect other teeth. In the case of a dental bridge, the healthy adjacent teeth have to perform the function of support. The implant doesn't put any strain on other teeth.

Thirdly, they require less maintenance. Fourthly, it is a well-accepted fact that dental implants actually look more aesthetically pleasing, more so when a single tooth replacement is sought.

A good and experienced dentist is capable of creating beautiful and very realistic new tooth with the use of right and high-quality raw materials. A good job done by an experienced dentist ensures a good outcome in terms of the facial outlook and correct placement of support for the cheeks and lips.

Dental implant treatment is a fantastic option for people with uncomfortable dentures and those with limited ease to chew food. Correctly done dental implants make eating and chewing more pleasurable.
