by Nitish Rana Writer

World Heart Day is observed on 29th September every year and is one of the world’s biggest platforms for raising awareness about cardiovascular diseasesincluding heart disease and stroke.

So the question that arises is: What basically leads to heart disease? Well, there are many factors that can be attributed to the fact that there has been a drastic increase in the number of people who are suffering from any kind of cardiovascular diseases.

It has been observed that the risk of heart disease increases around the age of 55 in women and 45 for men. Other risk factors for heart disease include:

1. Choosing an unhealthy lifestyle

It’s often said that a healthy mind resides in a healthy body. Our health greatly depends on the lifestyle we opt. Opting for an unhealthy lifestyle could prove hazardous to your body in the long run. For maintaining a healthy lifestyle we must avoid the following habits:

•     Not exercising properly

•    Eating an unhealthy diet which is high in fat proteins, transfats, sugary foods, and sodium

•    Excessive drinking and smoking

2. Not keeping a check on your diabetes

It is observed that adults with diabetes tend to have heart attacks at a younger age. The reason behind this is the relationship between blood vessels and glucose.

High blood glucose levels, if not managed, can increase the amount of plaque(a waxy substance made up of cholesterol, fatty molecules, and minerals) that forms within the walls of the blood vessels. This stops the flow of blood to the heart.

3. Interlink between depression and heart disease

Results of some studies have shown that people with depression have a greater risk of developing heart disease when compared to the general population. The reason behind this is that depression makes many changes in our body. People feel many emotions at the same time which may elevate one’s blood pressure. Depression leads to a feeling of constant anxiety and stress in a person due to which he loses all interest in the daily activities and starts following an unhealthy lifestyle.
