Working principle and applications of TIG welding technique

by Longevity Inc Industrial Mechanical
TIG stands for Tungsten Inert Gas welding and this technique makes use of a non-consumable tungsten electrode to produce a weld. It also uses a shielding gas such as helium, argon to protect the weld from air borne contaminants.

It is a manual welding process in which the welder uses his both hands for generating the welds. This welding technique is difficult to learn than other welding techniques as it requires more time to train in and experience to create welds. Different types of metals can be welded using this technique making it a highly versatile process. Unlike other arc welding techniques, there is no need of a filler metal while working with this technique.

Working principle

In this process, an electric arc is created between the tungsten electrode and the work piece to be weld. There is also a constant use of power supply to generate current and it can be either DC or AC.

Quality of welds produced

A welding professional has a greater control over the welding area

High quality and durable welds can be produced using this technique when performed by experienced and trained professionals

By maintaining cleanliness, welds of optimum quality can be produced as impurities such as dirt, oil and moisture etc. can cause porosity which decreases the quality and strength of the welds.

Applications of TIG welding technique:

Automotive industry

In the automobile industry, welds of strong and durable quality are required. TIG welding is corrosion resistant which is extremely important for making vehicles. Use of TIG welding technique is also essential in auto industry to ensure the safety of the travellers.

Aerospace industry

Various parts of aircraft and spacecraft are constructed by use of TIG welding.

TIG welding is recognized for its strength and precision which makes it extremely useful in   manufacturing of different parts of both commercial planes and complex craft.

For aesthetic purposes

TIG is known for producing aesthetically appealing welds. It makes TIG welding useful for all the artwork related welds such as industrial fixtures or metal sculptures and many others.

Repair industry

TIG welding process can be applied to a number of repair applications. It can be used to fix everything from a child’s toy to aluminum tools.
