Good employers always try to make work place safe for employees to work. But there are times when you’re very careful about your surroundings and still accidents occur. It may be a fall, trip, stubbed toe etc. but an injury is an injury. A serious injury could cost a lot not just to the employee but to the company as well.

It is not just employer’s responsibility to help create a culture of safety around the workplace but other employees should also make sure to keep the work place safe from the little hazard that may turn into big problems. It should be mandatory to wear safety shoes in work place to avoid injuries but small hazards should also not be ignored.

Let’s have a look at few small hazards that should be treated right away.

1) Oil Spillage on the Floor

Sometimes what may look like a small spot of spilled oil is potential enough for causing slips and falls. Although it is necessary for employees to wear safety boots to avoid fall due to wet floor but still one should not take chances.

To avoid any accidents due to spillage of oil should do the following:

Firstly,use an absorbent on top of the oil and clean up the area. Don’t forget to mark off the area to make sure that no one slips due to the oil. Secondly, always look for the main cause and try to fix it as soon as possible.

2) Packed Supplies Kept in the Aisle

Many a times some employees forget boxes or tools lefts out in the aisle area. It may not look hazardous and is a case of forgotten supplies or tools. However, the aisle is used by many customers and employees and these boxes and tools are potential to cause tripping that could lead to serious injuries.

To avoid tripping accidents be careful and follow the following steps:

Firstly, the aisle should be cleared for walking and boxes and tools should be placed at their place.If there is no proper storage space one should work to make one. Proper communication within the employees so as to avoid leaving the boxes anywhere, it will reduce tripping hazards due to cluttering down the walking area.

3) A ladder in Front of a Door

A well-known superstition of not walking under the ladder is quite common. But this commonly seen ladder in the work place can be quite dangerous if people walk into it and injure themselves. Steel toe safety boots are quite a savior from such injuries but there might be employees who are not wearing these shoes. Other common injury is falling off these ladders if one is not wearing proper safety shoes as they provide strong grip on the ladder.

To avoid any injuries due to ladder, one should take care of the following:

Always mark off a safe work area with warning tape. Also, support should be offered to the worker who is climbing the ladder.

4) Small Injuries May Turn Into Big Ones

Many employees overlook a small scratch or a little sprain and avoid going to the first aid station. However, if infection caused the small scratch can turn into something worse and could even be life threatening.

To avoid any seriousness in future the employee should be treated properly no matter how small the injury is. First aid kit quipped with essential equipment should be mandatory in the office premises.

Safety is a team effort! So keep your work place safe and create a sound environment to work with certain precautions to avoid injuries.
