Why We Need Sustainable Fashion

by Tyler P. A Passionate Blogger - Entertainment

Sustainable is the latest trend visible in the fashion world. Interestingly enough, it isn’t a must-have style or an outstanding color. Instead, it is a concept in fashion which talks of employing production practices which do not harm humans, animals, and the Earth. The textile industry has already wreaked havoc on the planet due to the processes used and waste production, and a need to undo the damage has naturally come forward. Here both the manufacturer and the buyer can play important roles.

What can companies do?

Organic fashion brands have to look at individual issues in the current scenario and look to handle the same to the best of their abilities. For example, some brands are closely looking at their supply chains to find out how much water consumption they can reduce. A significant part of the water on Earth is salted and thereby cannot be used, while a large part of the remainder has been squandered away to pollution. Apart from this, there are other brands which are handling multiple issues as well.

What can individuals do?

Individuals can show their support for ethical brands while purchasing their clothes from the best sustainable men’s clothing brands. They can limit their purchases to the clothes that they really use, and not stock up unnecessarily. It would also help to know about how clothes from their preferred brands are being produced- hand made clothes are the most environment friendly.

Buyers have to understand that quality is far more important than quantity. Clothes today are discarded faster than they ever were in the past. For wardrobes to become sustainable, buyers have to look at purchasing quality items and ignore the temptation of buying numerous cheap pieces instead. As is understandable, the durability of high quality clothes would be higher than the cheap items.

Organic cotton is currently the best way out of the adverse health and social outcomes created as a result of the textile industry. So far, this industry has caused havoc due to:

1) Huge consumption of energy and water resources

2) Tremendous chemicals being leaked on the soil

3) Several plastics let into the ecosystem

4) Harmful working conditions for laborers, along with non-payment of minimum wages

5) Lesser varieties of other crops due to mass cotton production

Number of websites

The number of websites which support the use of organic cotton and other eco friendly materials for clothes have increased over the years. Most of them sell clothes for both men and women. Each of these websites follows different sustainability measures, which can be put into practice only by involving the entire supply chain.

The fashion industry is one of the oldest industries in the world, and it simply has to adopt with the changing norms of the world, much like others. To make sustainability in the fashion sector a greater reality than what it is right now, the need of the hour is to move forward with a multi-pronged approach with inputs from government, the consumers, and the industry. Brands have to stop adopting confused marketing strategies and look at ways of balancing supply chain realities and consumer sentiments.
