Why our cities need to switch to LED lighting
Our cities never sleep; they’re never a dull
moment in them, quite literally. Looking from a plane you can easily see that
our cities are bright. Too bright some might say. Their brightness is causing
light pollution. Light pollution is referred to as the excessive, obtrusive and
unwanted artificial lighting. It is the alteration or degradation of natural
light in the environment by the introduction of artificial lights. Light
pollution is also known as luminous or photo pollution. It is caused as a
result of industrialization and modernization. We have all studied about this
in school, but none of us give it a second thought. But it’s time to start
thinking about it, because this might be a cause of some serious health
problems, can have adverse effects on our nocturnal wildlife and even our
ecosystem. With all that is already wrong with the environment we don’t really
need more to worry about, do we?
A few simple lifestyle changes can lead to
the reduction of light pollution. A simple thing like switch regular light
bulbs with LED landscape lighting can make a lot of difference. We can hardly
grasp how much outdoor artificial like we’re exposed to on a daily basis. There
are streetlights, billboard lights, and so many more. They are the reason our
nights aren’t dark anymore. These lights
contain hazardous materials like mercury and lead. They also consume a lot of
energy and can become very expensive because they’re less durable. Replacing
them with LED lighting can not only reduce our carbon footprint, but it can
also be more cost effective in the long run, as these bulbs are a lot more
durable than your regular lights.
LED Pathway lights, LED post top lights and LED bollards can change the skyline of your city. LED
lights are softer than normal lights and their environmental consequences are
also less harrowing, since they last longer they generate less waste.
The world is slowly but steadily adopting LED
technology for their lighting needs. A survey suggests that out of the 140
million street lights that were installed worldwide last year, about 19 million
were LED lights. These lights will aid in reducing light pollution and also
reduce energy consumption of street lights. LED light may not eradicate all the
problems that our environment faces every day because of our needs, but they
are taking us a step closer to being a bit friendlier towards our earth.
