The radio frequency identification (RFID) technology allows various companies to track items with the help of microchips and scanners. The microchips or tags can be placed in small or large assets and after that has been done, the items can be tracked with the help of scanner or RFID reader. If any one or more of them are shifted from the company’s buildings, the reader would automatically receive an update about it. Since the effective and competent technology of RFID has been introduced, the expenses incurred in tracking assets have come down significantly.

One of the biggest advantages of using RFID systems is that they can be customised as per the requirements of a company. In general, two types of this system exist as of now - one is active and the other, passive. A typical active system consists of RFID tags containing small batteries that enable them to establish connection with the home base by sending information to it. These tags have a fixed range, the maximum being about 100 feet. On the other hand, the tags used in passive systems do not contain any batteries. As a result, they are only able to transmit information when brought near the home base or receiver.

Another perk of using RFID asset tracking solutions is their ability to identify assets leaving designated areas. Not only does it help in preventing theft of the items, but also stops their misuse by employees. For instance, computers, servers and other hardware often run the risk of being used by employees in more than one location. Using an effective RFID tracking system can allow the managers and owners to be aware of such notoriety while they are taking place.

The scanners used within an RFID system also come as portable and handheld interrogators. If a company has extensive assets stored in multiple areas, an individual can move around the locations with portable interrogator in hand and collect information from the tags attached to different assets.

Although some companies may think that investing in radio frequency identification systems is expensive, the overall practical benefits that can be reaped from the utilisation of this technology counter the negligibly high expenses incurred. Besides that, it also helps to prevent loss of valuable assets and keep a track of them at all times without much or any manual labour. Scientists are even trying to make experimental improvements for enhancing the performance of this efficient tracking solution.
