WHY ARE JUMPSUITS CALLED A JUMPSUITS

by Modora Fashion Women's Fashion

We all love ourselves a jumpsuit. It is easy to style and convenient to carry. With the fast-paced environment we live in, always on the go, always somewhere to be, Jumpsuits are life savers for days we run late and have to look our best. It is versatile in its designs, and you can practically wear it anywhere. How did such ease and style come into being?

The origin:

The jumpsuits did not originate for the reasons we see them today. They were more famously associated with athletic wear and sports. Jumpsuits were worn by parachuters and skydivers and later adopted by pilots and professional drivers. It wasn't just them who wore it. It was also the almost life-endangering sports that jumpsuits were used for.

  1. The first introduction:

The first attempt to introduce jumpsuits was made by the Italian artist That. He designed the garment essentially as a jumpsuit and called it 'Tuta'. The intention with the tuta was basic everyday wear for the middle class. However, that was not the fate destined for it. The tuta turned out to be the talk of the town amongst the wealthy and became more socially associated with the upper class.

  1. The second introduction:

The initiative was taken once again by a Russian artist couple, Alexander Rodchenko and Varvara Stepanova. The goal was similar to That. Unfortunately, not did it only fail to achieve the goal, but it simply did not even begin at all. Early Soviet Russia was not interested in what they called the Varst.

  1. The third introduction:

A third attempt was made by Coco Chanel's rival, Elsa Schiaparelli, who introduced the jumpsuits for women for how we know them today. She introduced the high-class jumpsuit into the fashion world. Due to world war II, these jumpsuits were put on hold. However, cotton overalls with front pockets were still available as more women began stepping into the workforce while the men were off at war.

  1. Entering the mainstream fashion:

After the war, the late 60s and 70s came with a renewed interest in jumpsuits. Many designers started launching jumpsuits. The celebrities began wearing these. In the 70s, Elvis Presley made a statement with a jumpsuit in the music world and soon became synonymous with the disco era. Other musicians like Mick Jagger and David Bowie hopped on the trend.

From there on, the jumpsuits kept coming with surprises. The 'Whip it' was released in the 1980s and featured silver jumpsuits that quickly became the fashion statement. The shimmery silver colour with the embellishments was the talk of the town.

What was once sportswear meant only for skydivers and professional drivers, jumpsuits now are a mainstream article of clothing you find in women's section worldwide. The evolution of the jumpsuit supports the style it adopted over the decades; one thing remained the same. Its purpose. Jumpsuits were primarily effortless to carry practical clothing to carry out the required activities. Jumpsuits today are worn with the same goal: they are effortlessly styled, easy to carry and functional in terms of mobility.

So why do we call jumpsuits jump-suits? They take their name from the professionals who first wore this one-piece garment; the parachuters and skydivers.
