Why are Hatchbacks underrated?

In India, hatchbacks are usually associated with ‘low budget’ and ‘compromise’. People go for hatchbacks only because they can’t afford sedans with equally good features list. One goes for a Hyundai i20 because he/she can’t afford a Verna.

Sedans and SUVs are associated with success and well establishment. People assume you are successful if you own a Honda City. That might not be the case if you buy Honda Brio. So why this bias against the hatchbacks. Are hatchbacks not good enough?

That might not be the case though, because today hatchbacks provide similar features list when compared to sedans. True, sedans might be more comfortable and more fun to drive, but the hatchbacks aren’t far behind now.

The i20 provides plush ride quality, Baleno packs with a huge features list and Figo provides excellent driving dynamics. These hatchbacks don’t fall very back in anything when comparable to sedans.

Equally comparable sedans like the Dzire, Figo Aspire provide marginal increase in space but command a much higher price than the hatchback counterparts. So why hatchbacks are associated with the words like ‘low budget’ or ‘cheap’.

This is because the hatchbacks just can’t provide the levels of luxury like the sedans. The sedans and SUVs can provide the sense of opulence and luxury which the hatchbacks just can’t provide.

You would never find a luxury hatchback, but there are plenty of luxury sedans and SUVs. People want more space and more features. They don’t really mind shelling out more bucks if it provides the luxury they desire. People go for hatchbacks keeping budget or fuel economy as their main priority.

In a price sensitive market like India, budget cars are usually hatchbacks because of the versatility they provide over other cars in a reasonable price. Hatchbacks are more fuel efficient, provide decent comfort and good features list and don’t require to break the bank.

So Hatchbacks might not be classed as luxury vehicles but can definitely not be overlooked. These cars might be underrated but are definitely capable and do deserve the attention and the respect they deserve.
