Which are the budget-friendly domestic airlines in the US?

by David Smith Relationships

Introduction

Everyone loves a good deal, so when customers hear about the proliferation of "low-cost" carriers (LCC), they often get heart-eyes-emoji treatments. However, just because a flight is inexpensive doesn't mean that the flight is of poor quality, and some low-cost carriers are significantly superior to others. What makes an airline "low-cost" is really low overhead (rather than necessarily low passenger prices). Yes, reducing this cost can result in lower airfare for customers, but it is not what the term truly means. A low-cost airline does not seem to offer the both best airline prices and quality service than the full-service legacy carrier.

1. Spirit Airlines

Spirit Airlines offers the most basic, no-frills flying experience of any carrier in the country, with the most basic option available to travelers — the so-called "Bare Fare" — allowing just one personal item onboard the plane. While the carrier's frugality has earned it only two stars from Skytrax, there's no question that it has helped to keep fares down—low! Expect to pay approximately 40% less than the average budget fare in the United States.

  • Carry-on bags start at $33 one way. (One complimentary under-seat item is allowed.)
  • Checked bags start at $28 each way.
  • Seat selection begins at $9 each way.

2. Frontier Airlines

Frontier Airlines' jets, with their golden eagles, foxes, and Rocky Mountain bears gracing the American skies, offer passengers a variety of short-haul connections between the cities of the central United States. Passengers on the low-cost carrier benefit from fares starting at $30 round trip, as well as reduced baggage fees of $15 and an Early Returns mileage plan that provides rewards including hotel stays, rental cars, and priority boarding, to name a few.

  • Carry-on bags start at $39 each way (small personal items are allowed at no charge).
  • Checked bags start at $34 each way.
  • Seat choices start at $22 each way.

3.JetBlue Airways

JetBlue, the go-to airline for many Americans when it comes to budget-friendly coast-to-coast trips or cheap holiday jaunts to Mexico and the Caribbean, has climbed to a very respectable second place among some of the top budget carriers currently operating in the United States. It apparently means more legroom than other travelers, a 'Mint' business class counterpart on all transcontinental flights, on-board dining options, and much, much more! It is considered the second-best airlines to fly 2022 and offers the best airline prices.

  • A personal item and a carry-on
  • Non-alcoholic beverages and snacks
  • Changes and cancellations are free until February 28, 2021.
  • WiFi and seatback entertainment
  • Seat selection is free for Blue and above (a fee is charged for advance seat selection for Blue Basic).
  • For Blue and Blue Basic fares, checked bags start at $35 for each journey.

4. Virgin America

This first-place award for low-cost carrier Virgin America will come as no surprise; not with the prized award for airline personnel also glaring down from the San Francisco-based flier's trophy cases! This one, though, has much more to offer than simply an efficient cabin staff, featuring three distinct classes, acclaimed 'Red' entertainment systems, onboard Wi-Fi connectivity, and more luxurious airport lounges than you can toss an Elevate loyalty card at! It provides the best airline to fly 2022 and provides the best airline prices.

5. Southwest Airline

The most notable distinction is that on Southwest, every seat on every plane is economy class—and there is no assigned seating. When boarding, people take any seat available. There is some pre-boarding sorting (passengers are assigned a letter group and, within that, a number that determines when they board the aircraft; and you can pay extra to check in early and board earlier), but once on the plane, every open seat is fair game.

  • A personal item and a carry-on
  • Two complimentary checked bags
  • Non-alcoholic beverages and snacks
  • Changes are free.
  • Streaming media to your device
  • Seats are available for free (no pre-assigned seating; boarding order is determined by check-in time).
