How Long Does Fitness Equipment Last?

by David Smith Relationships

Purchasing fitness equipment is an investment because it costs a lot of money. Therefore, you need the equipment to last as long as possible. Nowadays, people want to set up gyms in their homes instead of visiting fitness centers. Thus, more and more fitness equipment purchases are happening all around.

The question about how long the equipment will last does not have a straight answer mostly because it depends on a few factors. The equipment you purchase, how often you do maintenance, and the frequency of use determine the equipment’s lifespan.

Typically, most life fitness equipment lasts between seven and twelve years. However, here are some details about the longevity of different equipment:

Longevity of Fitness Equipment

The durability of fitness equipment depends on the quality during purchase. For instance, high-quality cardio equipment lasts up to 20 years. Others can go up to a lifetime with proper maintenance and care. For example:

  • Treadmills - Last between 7 to 12 years
  • Ellipticals – Last 10 to 20 years
  • Rowers, barbells, free weights – Can last up to a lifespan
  • Workout benches – Up to 20 years

Many factors influence how long your fitness equipment lasts. Of course, general wear and tear is normal, but some users also contribute to breakdowns.

Factors Shortening the Lifespan of Fitness Equipment

  1. State During Purchase (Used vs. New)

New machines last longer than used ones. Still, if the new equipment is lower in quality, it will break down faster than the used one. So, when making purchases, pay close attention to the brand and quality to avoid buying low-quality equipment.

  1. Lack of Maintenance

Most machines used today need maintenance. If you have your gym set up at home, ensure you do proper maintenance regularly to keep the machines working properly. Commercial gyms might have to do theirs more often because the equipment is heavily used.

The best way to go about it is to organize monthly or weekly maintenance sessions, so you don’t forget. Equipment that is not well-maintained breaks down quickly.

  1. Improper Repairs

Inarguably, equipment will break down time and again. Treadmills and ellipticals, in particular, tend to break down more often. If you don’t know how to fix the machine, don’t do anything because it will damage your equipment.

Repairing life fitness equipment needs a professional if the manual is not straightforward enough. So, avoid doing repairs that could cause more damage to your equipment.

  1. Carelessness

You cannot control who comes to your gym. Also, individuals behave differently when using the equipment. For example, some may slam the equipment, mess with the cables, and lean on machines they’re not supposed to.

Establishing rules in your gym to prevent carelessness from clients is important. Otherwise, you’ll spend a lot of time and money fixing what shouldn’t be broken.

  1. Using Harsh Chemicals When Cleaning

Indeed, cleaning gym equipment is mandatory. However, using harsh chemicals wears down certain materials on the machines. Avoid using products with the following:

  • Ammonia
  • Alcohol
  • Bleach
  • Hydrogen peroxide
Proper maintenance and regular checks for wear and tear are ways to improve the longevity of fitness equipment. Still, equipment lasts different durations depending on its features and use. So, don’t expect a treadmill to last as long as barbells.
