Hair loss, medically known as alopecia can mean both, partial or complete loss of hair. The condition that affects people of all ages and genders can occur due to various causes such as fungal infection of scalp, harmful radiations from chemotherapy or radiotherapy and some other common yet significant causes such as iron and other nutritional deficiencies.

However, it is important here to note that noticing some stray hairs on your comb every time you brush is not an alarming situation by itself and so before you push the panic button and start listing out possible hair loss treatments, it is important that you thoroughly understand hair loss as a medical condition.

An average adult human head has about 100,000 to 150,000 hairs out of which about 100 to 150 are lost on a daily basis which is only normal. You see how it really works is that each hair follicle on our scalps has its own lifecycle that can be influenced by any of the causes stated at the beginning.

Lifecycle of each follicle has three primary phases that it goes through.

Anagen Phase:
At any one time, about 85% to 90% of all hairs are in the anagen or, in growth phase. This phase in which the growth of strands begins in papilla (skin organ that produces hair), can last from 2 to 6 years.

Catagen Phase: Towards the end of the anagen phase, your locks enter the catagen phase which is also known as the resting phase that lasts about 1 to 2 weeks. This stage marks the end of the active growth phase and it is during this phase, something called club hair is formed.

Telogen Phase: Also known as resting phase, telogen phase lasts about 5 to 6 weeks. The strands that enter this phase stop growing altogether but remain attached to their follicles. At any one time, about 10% to 15% of strands are in this phase.

Following the telogen phase, anagen begins again when the old strands are pushed out from the scalp by the new ones taking their place.

When really is hair loss a troubling situation?

An interruption in the hair growth cycle due to any triggering cause, meaning, if your anagen phase stays for a shorter period and promotes lesser percentage of hair than normally required and if the resting phase stays for a longer duration affecting a high percentage of hair than the normal rate, due to any triggering cause, then hair loss is a problem.

In simpler words, if you experience more fall out of strands over a longer duration with significantly less to no re-growth, then hair fall is definitely an issue.
