What you should know about your hernia

Hernia is a very common, yet painful condition where part of an organ protrudes through the cavity wall surrounding it.

Part of an internal organ bulges through an area of weak muscle, most commonly in the abdomen.

While they often originate from birth, hernia can appear at the site of a previous surgery.

There are several different types of hernia, but the most common are inguinal - in the groin and umbilical - the naval area.

Others are hiatal hernia which occurs when a section of the stomach protrudes through the diaphragm, and incisional - which occurs when the site of a surgery incision is weakened.

The most common type of hernia is the inguinal hernia which accounts of 75 percent of cases, and can affect males and females.

Diagnosis is relatively straight forward as the patient will usually present with pain or discomfort near the site of the condition, weakness, pressure or heavy sensation in the abdomen and/or a burning sensation at the site of the bulge.

Very often, this bulge can be pushed back when the patient is lying down.
