There are also Home Care agencies that focus on providing respite care to seniors and those with disabilities. Senior home care agencies provide personalized, senior care services to meet the unique needs of the elderly and their family members. These services include housekeeping, laundry assistance, meals preparation and cooking, housekeeping support, shopping and transportation assistance, transportation needs, personal care products and companion care.

How do I get a home care license in North Carolina? Home Care services can be provided by licensed or non-licensed caregivers. According to the National Home Care Association (NCHC), licensed caregivers provide a comprehensive range of home care services for their clients, while non-licensed caregivers, referred to as family caregivers, provide services that are directly supervised by a licensed caregiver. The services that licensed caregivers provide include but are not limited to administering prescribed medications and monitoring the condition of a patient. They also provide activities of daily living (ADL) such as bathing, dressing, eating and using the restroom. ADL requires that the individual know the appropriate tasks and how to do them. ADL also requires that the individual understand the purpose of life and be able to express it to others.

It is important for families to choose licensed and qualified caregivers who can meet the needs of their loved one(s). A licensed home care services provider must meet specific state requirements to be considered valid and eligible for services. These requirements vary from state to state, and can often times be found in the law or in a handbook of information provided by your local Department of Social Services. Home care services providers are required to undergo background and criminal justice checks, complete a training program, complete an ethics and standards assessment and be certified through the Commission on Aging (CAA). CAA also has specific guidelines that the caregiver must follow in order to ensure quality care for their client.

In addition to the services already described, home care services may also include occupational and speech therapy, physical therapy and even psychotherapy services. These additional services are usually only available through a healthcare agency. Some agencies offer these additional services at no additional cost. Some agencies do charge an additional fee for services that are beyond the scope of their service agreement.

The most common type of family home care service is medical assistance. This is usually provided by nurses or doctors that are licensed to provide care under the care plan. Other types of services that may be offered by a caregiver agency include home maintenance, meal planning, and transportation to doctor appointments. Senior in home services also provide assistance with bathing, dressing, grooming and other personal care needs of elderly family members. Many agencies also provide help with navigating the senior home care process, such as finding appropriate furniture.
