Image The job of a professional athletic trainer is manifold. People who are looking for such a trainer are not only going to look at educational qualifications and certifications. There is a lot more involved. So what are the qualities that a professional athletic trainer should possess? Read on to find out.

Passion For Sports:
This is a given. Unless and until the person has a great passion for the particular sport, there is no point in hiring him no matter how many degrees and certifications he might have. He should have a passion for all athletic endeavors and good health to be good at his job. No matter what kind of athletic endeavor it might be, it is important that the passion shows.

Self-confidence:
Having self-confidence is the key to be a really good professional athletic trainer. This is because the person will have to deal with a variety of personalities while he is on job: whether it is on-field or off-field. Having the self-confidence to deal with everyone will ensure that there is no clash of personalities. Not only will the person have to deal with the athlete himself, he will also have to deal with the team coach, the support staff, the team manager, other trainers, the administrators and the family members of the athletes themselves. It is important to understand that the trainer will not be working with just the athlete in a vacuum because that is not possible. So choosing someone who exudes confidence in himself and his abilities is essential.

Superlative Interpersonal Skills:

This follows from the above point. Superlative interpersonal skills are anther benchmark of a quality athletic trainer. This is because the person will have to interact with a wide section of people on a normal working day. It is important to understand that interpersonal skills of a professional trainer does not mean that he is a ‘’nice’’ person. Far from that! A good trainer should be strong enough to establish a good rapport with athletes so that he can train them, listen to them and have them listen to him. He should be someone who can look at people straight in the eye, listens well and does not interrupt when one is talking. All these are the mark of great interpersonal skills.

Attention To Detail:
A good professional athletic trainer should be able to pay attention to detail. This is vital especially if the athletes in question happen to be pro and elite. These elite athletes desire to compete and win can be so huge that they may not speak the truth all the time about injuries and health. It is up to the trainer to pay close attention to find out the truth to keep them from hurting themselves.

Decision-taking Ability:
No matter how great an athlete might be in the sport he has chosen, it will be difficult for him to understand the exactly nature of his injury, whether during an event or while practicing. That is why it is up to the trainer to take the right decision based on the information he has available. Good decision-taking is an asset that one needs to look for in a trainer.

An athlete trainer is someone who is going to be on the side of the athlete's day in and day out. It is thus very important for them to not only possess the above qualities, but also be empathetic. When an athlete’s health needs more support, it is up to the trainer to ensure that he gets the best treatment so that he can recover as soon as possible. Ultimately, the best person to hire for the job is someone who can keep athletes in their best possible shape.
