What To Do When My Gmail Messages Are Not Found?

First try these general troubleshooting steps:

These steps should be done on computer because many of its features are not available on Gmail app.
1. Inspect if any message was archived, removed or marked as spam.

These actions might have been taken by you accidently. Do the following:

  • Login to your Gmail account on the computer.
  • Navigate to search box and click the down arrow button.
  • Now, select All Mail from the drop-down list.
  • Click Mail & Spam & Trash option and move to next step.
  • Enter the few hints you remember for the missing email.
  • Hit the Search button to get the results.

2. Check if the message was filtered

It is possible that you have created a filter that automatically archives or removes certain messages. Follow the given steps to check the filters:

  • Open a browser and visit Gmail Sign-In page.
  • Sign into your account and navigate to Settings icon.
  • Click Settings from the available options and move to Filters and Blocked Addresses tab.
  • Now, locate the filters which include the words like “Delete it” or “Skip inbox”.
  • Towards right, select Edit button or Delete and then follow the on-screen instructions.

3. Confirm if your emails are being forwarded to another account

Follow the given instructions to check forwarding settings:

  • Login to Gmail and click Settings options.
  • Choose Settings and then click the Forwarding and POP/IMAP tab.
  • Now, check if you have selected Forward a copy of incoming mail in the Forwarding section.
  • Select the option Keep Gmail’s copy in the inbox or Mark Gmail’s copy as read.
  • Click Save changes to save the above settings.

If the steps mentioned above didn’t help you, then note the following points:

  • Messages can’t be retrieved after 30 days of deleting the emails. After 30 days, they are permanently deleted from the Trash folder. Same applies to Spam emails, if a particular message stays for 30 days in Spam folder, then after the completion of duration, it will be removed permanently from the folder.
  • Users get only one copy of every Gmail email. If you removed a message from one place, like from a label or a device, then it is removed from Gmail entirely.
