What Size Commercial Air Conditioner Do I Need

by kapil Mehta # Guest Blogger

Beating the heat can be hard if you aren’t adequately supplied when trying to set up an office building or other workspaces you don’t want the people who work there to be overheated, so getting a proper commercial air conditioning unit is essential. But what exactly is a commercial air conditioning unit? And how do you know what size is the best for your space? We’ll be answering these questions here to help you find the AC unit that will best suit your space.

What is a commercial air conditioning unit?

A commercial air conditioning unit is a special type of AC unit meant for larger spaces, such as workplaces or apartments. They make the area far too cold for a single household, and should only be used in professional spaces. There are a few different types of commercial air conditioning units which each have their pros and cons, and would each be suited for various sorts of environments.

Single split system: A single split AC system is an affordable AC system which cools a single large space.

-        Pros: Affordable and self-contained since each system only covers one area.

-       Cons: Every single split AC system requires an outdoor unit, so having too many isn’t space efficient.

Multi-split system: Like a single split system except one outdoor unit can power multiple indoor units using multiple ventilation shafts.

-      Pros: Fewer outdoor units, works with wall and ceiling mounted units.

-        Cons: Needs more vents to be installed, raising the price of instalment.

VRF Unit: An advanced type of commercial air conditioning unit which comes in two varieties, heat pump and heat recovery. A heat pump allows you to heat or cool a building, while heat recovery lets you simultaneously heat and cool different parts of the building.

-        Pros: Work well for larger buildings. Easy to install and use, and had some flexibility.

-       Cons: Higher installation costs

How do you decide what size to get?

There are a few things to keep in mind when deciding on a size for your AC unit, you need to carefully consider what size to get since if it’s too small your building won’t be cool enough, or if it’s too big you’ll waste money.

-     Size of the room: The most crucial factor to consider is the size of the room you’re cooling, and the number of rooms. You need to consider the volume of the room, meaning that you need to consider how tall the room is in addition to its length and width. The larger a room’s volume, the bigger an AC unit you’ll need to get to properly cool the area. If you have multiple spaces that need cooling, you’ll need to get either a VRF unit or a multi-split system to properly vent air between all the different spaces, keeping in mind that you’ll need an AC unit able to cool all the rooms instead of just one.

-      Light level: Keep in mind the number of windows in a room, along with how sunny or shady the room is on average. If the room is too sunny or has a lot of windows, it’ll often be warmer and require a more powerful AC unit. If your room is very shady or has fewer windows, you won’t need as powerful of an AC unit since the shade will prevent the room from getting too warm.

-       The number of people: Humans passively create heat just by existing, a space with a lot of people is going to be warmer than a space with few people. So when deciding on the size of your commercial air conditioner unit, think about how many people it’ll be cooling. A tightly packed office building or a well-staffed factory assembly room will likely require a far bigger AC unit than a small apartment building or a smaller less staffed office workspace.
