What should you know before acid washing a pool?

Maintaining a swimming pool in the backyard might sound exciting but comes with its own set of cons. Well, these are nothing but immense hard work and determination required for proper maintenance. Else, it would turn into an unused pool with dirty water and broken filters.

An acid wash is one of the important steps of a monthly pool service. An acid-based cleaning service completely removes or lessens stains on the pool’s plaster surface, by using chemicals.  Of course, it is cheaper than using re-plastering the entire surface. However, it is equally important for a homeowner to know and understand both the risks and advantages associated with the usage of chemicals.

Let’s discuss the adversaries first. Of course, acid washing can drastically reduce stains or completely remove them from your pool’s surface. However, this might as well lessen the lifespan of the plaster finishes. Muriatic Acid, the most common chemical which is used, is highly risky and corrosive.  So, it is always advised that while you are attempting acid wash, it should be always done by a professional.

Having said that now comes the advantages. There are two ways in which you can apply the chemicals, mainly depending on whether the pool is empty or full.

Using chemicals without emptying Your Pool: This type of acid washing is perfect for the pool plaster if it contains fewer stains. The muriatic acid, when mixed with water, gives a good cleaning. However, always remember that you cannot use the pool while the chemical is still on. Once the water is completely acid-free and the chemicals are rebalanced, you can always use your pool.

Using the chemicals in an empty pool: While you have already decided to empty the pool for other maintenances also, you would have to decide hard whether the need for an acid wash is worth it. One thing is for sure that acid washing is the last step. After this, a finish is applied to the texture, which might be a glass silky-smooth texture.

Now, after having known all that, here are certain things to consider before you start with the acid wash:

The acid wash is best left in the hands of professionals, as the chemicals are risky and corrosive. They would have a clear knowledge of the proper amount based on the pool size and the straining intensity.

Acid washes suit best when minor discolorations are caused due to leaves falling over the pool.

Acid wash works well when a new finish texture is used to remove the residues of cement.

Along with the cost of the acid wash, sometimes the cost of refilling the pool is also inclusive if the situation demands.

Because of this entire hassle of pool maintenance, and the skill and expertise required to keep your pool in perfect working condition, the majority of the house owners opt for professionals. Be it acid wash or pool line leak repair, these businesses offer services the year around. In fact, they might also suggest certain add-ons to enhance the beauty of your pool area.
