What should be paid attention to when purchasing custom permanent magnets?
by Julissa G. Content generatorWhen designing permanent magnets or
magnetic components for new applications, there are many factors to consider,
such as the following factors.
1. What is the main function of the magnet?
Permanent magnets are generally used for
the following seven purposes: holding, moving, clamping, filtering, activating
sensors, generating current or generating damping effects. Before designing a
magnet, you must first understand exactly how to use it.
2. Will the magnet bear physical force?
All magnetic materials are usually fragile. In order to prevent continuous or sudden impact, the magnet can be coated or placed in a steel shell.
3. Will the magnet be affected by extreme temperatures?
Magnets of different materials and grades have
very different maximum operating temperatures and temperature coefficients. For
example, standard neodymium magnets will suffer irreversible performance loss
at 80 degrees Celsius, while AlNiCo magnets can withstand temperatures up to
500 degrees Celsius before they suffer irreversible loss.
4. Will the magnet be used in a corrosive environment?
Some permanent magnets, such as neodymium magnets (neodymium iron boron
magnets), are extremely susceptible to corrosion, while ferrite magnets will
never corrode.
5. Does the magnet need a specific magnetic field strength?
The magnetic field strength is a value that contributes to the overall
magnetic performance of the magnet. Certain applications, such as sensor
activation, require a magnet with a specific magnetic field strength or
open-circuit magnetic flux density (in Gauss).
6.
Will the magnet work through the air gap?
Magnets do not always need to directly contact the surfaces or parts with which they interact. Some magnetic materials will provide greater magnetic field strength than others.
7.
How will the magnet be fixed in place?
Although the solution is usually simple, the fixing method is a crucial
consideration, whether it is punching or dispensing, or choosing threaded steel
shell components.
