What separates a great musician from just another musician?

by Deep Gold Deep Gold's Music in Maine

You can have two individuals, with comparable musical skills, play similar notes on a guitar and get a radically different reaction from the audience. You can also have artists who train tirelessly and become very admirable at technically handling their instrument but when you hear them play, they rarely trigger an emotional reaction in the audience. On the other hand, you have the other kind of performers like Deep Gold from Maine, who are undeniably technically good, but it’s their delivery that always triggers an apparent powerful reaction in their audience. So what is the element that makes the difference?

Perhaps we can begin to answer that by following it with this question; does the instrument have anything to do in making a great musician? The answer is, as you might have suspected, not really. The instrument is just incidental, in fact, a great musician can simply whistle and still win over a positive reaction. Take any of Deep Gold’s performances, for example: so simple and raw yet so magical and enchanting. Why? Because artists like him have a passion for music and they know how to better tap into it in order to keep their audience on a hook. The possession of that passion and talent is the key difference between a great musician and just a musician.

Ultimately, it is an artist’s worth, in terms of influencing and inspiring their audience that makes them a great musician.
