Kidney transplant- Overview

A kidney transplant is surgery to replace a diseased kidney with a healthy kidney from a donor. The kidney can come from a deceased organ donor or a living donor. Family members or others who are a good match may be able to donate one of their kidneys. This type of transplant is called a living transplant. People donating a kidney can lead a healthy life with a healthy kidney.

A transplant person often gets only 1 kidney. In rare circumstances, he may receive 2 kidneys from a deceased donor. Diseased kidneys are usually left in their place. The transplanted kidney is placed on the front side of the body in the lower abdomen. In today's article, we are going to tell you about the success rate of a kidney transplant.

Why does one need a kidney transplant?

A kidney transplant can be beneficial in the treatment of chronic kidney disease or kidney failure and is usually the preferred treatment when the kidney has lost about 90% of its normal function.

Some symptoms can help in detecting the need for a kidney transplant, which are-

  • Swelling of hands and feet and face

  • Headache

  • High blood pressure

  • Yellowing of the skin

  • Coffee-colored urine

  • Feeling tired or fatigue

Patients with kidney failure can also choose to undergo dialysis, although compared to dialysis, the kidney transplant has the following advantages.

  • The quality of life is better after a kidney transplant. Now you do not have to make frequent visits to the dialysis centre for treatment and you are left dependent on the dialysis machine for a long time.

  • The risk of death is low

  • Fewer restrictions on food

  • The cost of treatment in a kidney transplant is less

How to do a kidney transplant?

  • A kidney transplant is done under general anaesthesia so that you are asleep and feel no pain during the surgery.

  •  The anaesthetic is injected into the body through a vein line (IV) in your arm or arm.

  • The process takes about 2 to 4 hours.

  • Throughout the surgery, the surgical team will monitor your vital organs such as your heart rate, blood pressure, and blood oxygen levels.

  • Once the patient is asleep, the doctor will make an incision on one side of the abdomen and place a new kidney.

  • Kidney transplant surgery is a heterotrophic type of surgery in which the kidney is placed at a different location from the existing kidney. The new kidney is placed in the pelvis, in the front or anterior part of the lower abdomen.

  • The original kidneys are not removed from the body unless they are causing serious problems like uncontrolled high blood pressure, frequent kidney infections, kidney stones, pain, etc.

  • The blood vessels of the new kidney are surgically connected to the blood vessels in the lower abdomen and the ureter (the tube connecting the kidney to the bladder) is connected to the bladder.

What are the success rates of kidney transplant?

According to the Organ Procurement and Transplantation Network (OPTN) in the United States, (U.S.), the success rate after kidney transplant with a living donor was reported to be 97% at 1 year and 86% at 5 years. Deceased-donor kidney success rates were 96% at 1 year and 79% at 5 years.

However, several factors can affect the success rate of a kidney transplant such as the choice of hospital, the expertise of the surgeon and transplant team, post-operative care, tissue matching, donor compatibility, whether or not the donor is blood-related. , the overall health of the recipient, age of the recipient, etc.

The kidney transplant success rate in India is one of the highest in the world.

Kidney transplant cost in India?

The total cost of kidney transplant in India can range from around INR 6,00,000 to INR 11,00,000. However, the cost of a kidney transplant may vary from hospital to hospital. There are many successful hospitals in India where Kidney Transplant is done with great success, like in Bangalore.
