Do you own a Volkswagen van and are worried about your next MOT? Then relax and just sip a cup of coffee. Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles (VWCV) has announced an MOT insurance scheme that covers you for up to £750 worth of work, should your qualifying VW fail its next annual MOT Coventry. We know you probably have some questions in your head.

In this blog post, we are going to talk all about Volkswagen's commercial vehicle MOT insurance scheme. We will share when and how you get the cover for the VW van for repairs and more. If you are interested in knowing more about the MOT insurance scheme then keep reading.

What is The VW Van MOT Insurance Scheme?

Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles introduced a new MOT insurance scheme, which focuses on giving drivers and owners complete peace of mind. As per the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA), one out of six vehicles failed their MOT test on their first attempt.

This figure shows how often the dreaded VT30 failure certificate is issued. But, Those Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles customers who opt for the new MOT insurance scheme are covered for up to £750 for repairs if their Van fails its MOT test in the VW Centre. They also offered free of charge to all customers with qualifying vehicles.

The VW customers who opt for insurance should have their MOT test completed in a VN MOT Centre. It is available for all Volkswagen Commercial vehicles under 10 years old and with fewer than 150,000 recorded miles.

It doesn’t count the standard wear and tear items such as tyres, brakes, bulbs and fuse, along with any bodywork and glass. But they cover a wide variety of important components that could potentially land owners with a hefty bill.

If a VW customer vehicle fails a MOT test performed out of a Volkswagen Van Centre, the insurance policy covers the cost of repairs up to £750. So instead of paying the big bill, the customer only has to spend a £10 excess fee for the claim. All the work is performed by fully qualified Volkswagen experts using only genuine Volkswagen components.

Although VW centres can arrange for the policy to be issued to any qualified vehicles that are due for an MOT more than ninety days in advance, the new MOT insurance programme was initially given to VW customers to cover the MOT test for the following year.

How Can MY VW Van Qualify For The VWCV MOT Insurance Scheme?

The insurance is available for all Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles under 10 years old or fewer than 150,000 recorded miles. All the VW commercial vehicles such as Crafter, Transporter and Amarok that meet this requirement should be included in the MOT insurance scheme.

But, there are some limitations to when you get the policy to claim for it. So that means you can’t just turn up for an MOT and expect the cover when your van or pickup fails the test. You need to have made some prior contact with the Van Centre.

VW Van MOT Insurance Before My Upcoming MOT

Volkswagen states that Van centres can arrange for the policy to be applied to all qualifying vehicles that are pending an MOT more than 90 days in advance. So if it’s over about three months until your MOT is due, your vehicle can get covered now. But if it’s next week then, unfortunately, you won’t get the cover.

What Does The VW Van MOT Insurance Policy Cover?

Many items don’t fall under the standard ‘wear and tear” that are:

  • Brake control systems, not the discs and pads

  • Airbags

  • Electronics

  • Suspension and steering parts

  • Seatbelts which include mountings and pre-tensioners

  • Fuel injection systems

  • Emission control systems

You can reach the nearest Volkswagen Van Centre to get even more details, but given the cover is free it would seem daft to turn it down based on what it doesn’t cover.

What Covers in VW Van MOT Insurance Policy?

The exceptions are most “wear and tear’ related parts. Here are some of the components that are not covered in the MOT insurance policy:

  • Bulbs

  • Tyres

  • Brakes

  • Fuses

  • Bodywork

  • Glass

The first four parts of these are precisely the sorts of things owners should be checking on regularly anyway. There are not many excuses for failing an MOT because a bulb has blown, whole bad tyres and brakes are more dangerous and should be fixed as soon as possible.

These are also things that wear out over time, it is no surprise the Volkswagon isn’t covering them. The glass and bodywork exceptions are similarly expected, as issues such as broken windscreen and rust can often be the result of how the van has been used.

The vehicle's standard warranties, which cover the painting for three years from the date of purchase and the general bodywork for twelve years from the date of registration, should, in theory, cover rust damage.

What Happens If The MOT Repair Cost is More Than £750?

In that case, you will have to pay the rest of the amount to repair your Van to be able to pass its MOT Coventry. Otherwise, you need to scrap your van because you will not be able to drive your van within the UK if the MOT is expired.
