What is the difference between industrial and permanent magnets?

by monika r. Consultant
Magnets are used for different purposes. It is used in almost every electronic application. However depending on the use, the magnet could be an industrial magnet or a permanent magnet.  The industrial magnets and permanent magnets both hold different benefits and characteristics.

Permanent magnets

The atoms in the magnetic material of permanent magnetic have been permanently aligned in order to generate a constant magnetic field. The magnetizing progression occurs during manufacturing. Permanent magnets are also known as bar magnets. In permanent magnet, the strength of the magnetic field is constant.
Permanent magnets can be made up of different materials. It includes ceramic, neodymium, samarium-cobalt and alnico. Samarium-cobalt and Neodymium magnets are also known as rare earth magnets.

Industrial magnets

The industrial magnets works on electricity.  The magnetic force is produced when the power is turned on and stops when the electrical power is detached.   A simple industrial magnet is formed by wrapping conductive cable in tight coils in the region of a ferrous hub.  Once the wire is hooked to electrical energy, a magnetic field is formed.  The magnetic field discontinues when the electrical current stop.

Types of Permanent Magnets

There are different types of permanent magnets made by magnets manufacturers. These are as follows:

Alnico Magnets

Alnico magnets have high-quality temperature constancy. The magnets can produce strong magnetic fields. But there is a major disadvantage of using alnico magnets. It is that, these magnets can be easily demagnetized. The alnico magnets are used in different applications like automotive sensors, electronic sensors, etc. Alnico magnet consists of elements like aluminum, nickel, copper, titanium, iron and cobalt.

Ceramic Magnet

The ceramic magnets are the most low-priced permanent magnets. The magnets are used in resonance imaging, food processing industries etc.

Flexible Magnets

The door seals which are used in refrigerators are flexible magnets. The flexible magnet is produced by combining plastic with magnetic powders and rubber polymers.

Neodymium Iron Boron Magnet

Neodymium Iron Boron Magnet is a very expensive material. The magnet is used in different applications like in book binding, jewellery making etc.

Samarium Cobalt Magnet

Samarium Cobalt Magnet is a kind of unusual earth magnet. The magnet is resistant to oxidation and temperature. It contains higher Magnetic strength. The magnet is mostly used in turbo machinery and high end motors etc.

Difference between Permanent Magnets and Industrial Magnets

Generally, the difference between permanent magnets and industrial magnets comes down to two main points. These are Loss of properties and Magnetic strength. The permanent magnets anticipate retaining their magnetic strength eternally.  With few exceptions such as permanent magnets remains magnetized constantly and exceeding maximum operating temperature. But, industrial magnets achieve or drop their magnetic possessions based on the supply of electric power. The magnetic force of permanent magnets mainly depends on the material frame of the magnet.  Their inbuilt physical constitution dictates the highest amount of power based on size, shape and material.  It is a fixed number that doesn’t change after magnetization. On the other hand, the industrial magnets distinguish their potency fluctuate depending on the amount of current supplied.
