What Is Meant By IntraUterine Insemination (IUI)?

Who does it correct?

IUI is commonly the first line of treatment when medicine and timed intercourse does not result. It is suggested for patients with mild to moderate reduction in sperm count and motility, or if there is mild endometriosis. For women who do not ovulate exactly, ovulation induction may be combined with IUI. Also, for a few couples who don't have any manifest cause for infertility (unexplained infertility), IUI may be recommended.

What are the specifications before an IUI?

Possible complications

If there is a wild risk of this happening, your doctor will advise you accordingly, and the cycle may be canceled or converted to an IVF cycle. Infection is an infrequent complication.

Worldwide, the completion rates for IUI average at about 15%. Around 80% of the pregnancies happen within the first three IUI cycles. Everyone generally recommends a maximum of three IUI cycles.

Medications to Increase Success Rates


Studies suggest that IUI success rates are improved if the woman also experiences moderate treatment with medications. A choice to take medication to stimulate the ovaries would be done in consultation with your doctor.


Most patients start with both clomiphene citrate or Letrozole oral medications, taken for five days shortly after menstruation starts. Alternatively, you might be told to take injectable fertility drugs, which are more aggressive in stimulating multiple egg release.
