Abstract on Parkinson disease psychosis update: Psychotic symptoms are typical in drug treated patients with Parkinson's disease (PD). Visual phantasms occur in about 30% and delusions, typically neurotic in nature, happen in about 5%. These intricacies, particularly the delusions, cause high distress for both the patient and caregivers, and are amongst the most important precipitants for nursing home position. Psychotic traits carry a bad prognosis. They often declare dementia, and are correlated with increased mortality. These symptoms oftentimes decline with medication reductions, but this may not be endured due to worsened motor capacity.  While quetiapine has been approved by the American Academy of Neurology for "consideration," double blind placebo regulated trials have shown safety but not efficacy. Other antipsychotic drugs have been advised to worsen motor function and data on the effectiveness of cholinesterase inhibitors is restricted. PDP prevails as a serious problem with limited treatment options.
