Here is an official definition:

Hypnosis is the induction of a state of consciousness in which a person is very aware of suggestion or direction.

To give a more comprehensive answer you could say that hypnosis is often over mystified, mis-understood, or simply over complicated. Hypnosis is used to describe a trance like state.

However, in point of fact we all go in and out of mild “trances” every day; such as in those moments when our minds wander and we fantasize, we even enter a hypnosis like state when we simply sit down to read the sunday paper and give it our full attention - going into a mini hypnotic trance and blocking the rest of the world out.

These are all examples of trance like states, and they are all organic and natural. Hypnosis simply puts you into one of these mild “trance” states purposefully , and gradually, as you keep getting exposed to the hypnotic suggestions of the hypnotist, your patterns of thinking and self beliefs will start to change.

Although you might not remember everything which is said to you once you enter a trance you are not actually asleep, hypnosis is a wakeful state in which you are both deeply calm yet have a heightened level of suggestibility as well as a concentrated awareness.

Due to this heightened frame of mind it is possible to use hypnosis to make changes within your mind which would be much harder with conscious coaching alone.

Hypnosis gains access the subconscious mind and reduces the undesirable traits that prevent personal growth.

What can hypnosis help?

Hypnosis has a good reputation for treating phobic disorders and fears, or at least this is how it began out. It then started to be used with great success for weight loss and giving up smoking.

Hypnosis is now used for the elimination of almost any damaging belief, it is used to help a wide range of health problems, and is massively effective for improving self beliefs such as confidence and self esteem.
