What Is Hematologic Neoplasms & Get Best Oncology Physicians?

by Barry Smith Avam Cancer Specialists

Neoplasms are generally located in the blood and blood-forming tissues like the lymphatic tissue and bone marrow, peripheral blood, and spleen. These cells can also involve the nervous system and the gastrointestinal tract. They can involve these either by direct tumor infiltration or by metastasis; another method of involvement is by a neoplastic transformation of extraodal lymphoid tissues. These are treated by oncology physicians with expert knowledge in treating such cancers and disorders.

The most common form of hematologic neoplasms are:

  • Lymphoma

  • Leukemia

  • Myelodysplastic Syndromes

  • Myeloproliferative Neoplasms

Lymphoma

Lymphoma is a cancer of lymphocytes which means that the cancer cells infect the immune system making our body weak and vulnerable to fight any disease. These abnormal cells can be found in the spleen, lymph nodes, thymus, bone marrow, and other parts of the body. The two types of lymphoma are Hodgkin and Non-Hodgkin lymphoma. Most people have Non-Hodgkin lymphoma. Both of these lymphomas involve different types of lymphoma cells as each lymphoma has its own growth rate and will respond to the treatment differently. Lymphoma is treatable depending upon the stage of its progress.

Leukemia

Leukemia is a type of blood cancer that is caused by the rise in the number of white blood cells. The white blood cells are the fighters of the body and they fight infection, if the number increases to a certain amount then the capabilities of the white blood cells are diminished. The symptoms of leukemia are weakness and fatigue, fever, chills, vomiting, headaches, pain in your bone and joints, bruising or easy bleeding, shortness of breath, night sweats, swelling in your spleen, and many more. This type of hematologic neoplasms can be detected and treated by the oncology physician.

Myelodysplastic Syndrome

If there are many poorly formed blood cells that do not perform properly then they group up causing a collection of improper cells that will become Myelodysplastic syndrome disorder. This disorder is caused when something is missing from your bone marrow. The treatment will involve lowering further complications and it might also involve chemotherapy but this will be decided by the oncology physician. The different complications involve lower blood cell count (anemia), fatigue, shortness of breath, easy bruising or bleeding, the red spot of pin-point size beneath your skin, and constant infections because of lower white blood cell count.

Myeloproliferative Neoplasms

This is a condition that causes blood cancer when the body develops too many red blood cells, white blood cells, or platelets. These cells are formed in the bone marrow and overflow of them can lead to various symptoms. There are three main types known as Polycythemia vera (PV), Essential thrombocythemia (ET), and Myelofibrosis (MF).
