What is Google My Business?

by Mahira Digital Digital Marketing Manager
Why should I take my business online?

This is a common question among traditional business owners. Not all traditional "brick-and-mortar" businesses understand what Google My Business (now known as Google Business Profile) is and how important it is in today's competitive digital industry.

If you are one of these traditional businesses, you are missing out on a larger pool of potential clients online.

First, let's define traditional "brick-and-mortar" businesses. Traditional businesses have a physical location. They sell their goods or services in person, via mail, or over the phone. These businesses do not sell physical goods or services through digital channels.

You must start doing business online to grow your business and build a stronger customer base.

Top Reasons Why Your Offline Business Needs An Online Presence
Taking your business online, whether through a website, a social media page, an e-commerce platform, or a combination of these, opens up a world of possibilities.

Here are the top five reasons you should create an online presence right now:

  • Establish brand authority
  • Make it easier for potential customers to contact you
  • Market your brand to a larger clientele
  • Overcome location barriers
  • Build stronger relationships with existing and potential customers
  • Provide better customer support
  • Reduce operation costs

The internet is essential for reaching out to more prospective customers and converting them into qualified leads and sales. Take advantage of this opportunity to improve your customer experience and satisfaction. It's time to gain a competitive advantage online with your offline business!

How to Register Your Company with Google My Business
To add your business to Google My Business, or to claim ownership of an existing Google My Business page (which Google may have created automatically based on information from an old Google Places page or references to your business found on third-party websites), go to https://www.google.com/business/ and sign in with any Google account you have (Gmail, YouTube, and Analytics).

After you sign in, you'll see the screen below, where you can enter the following information about your company: business name, street address, town/city, postcode, phone number, business category, and website address. Please provide as much detail as possible. The more information visitors to your page have about your company, the more likely they trust you.

It's worth noting that Google takes the professionalism and accuracy of its local business listings seriously and incorporates automatic filters and manual reviews into its Google My Business platform to prevent businesses from providing false or misleading information. They have strict guidelines, particularly regarding the name, phone number, and address businesses provide; if you want to be included in their local search results, you must follow them.

Your company name should be the same as the one you use to represent your company offline. The business name field should not include taglines, phone numbers, web addresses, locations, or keywords. Your phone number should be your primary business phone number, not your home number, mobile number, or call tracking number. While it is not required to use a phone number with a local area code that corresponds to the town or city where you claim to be based, having one is advantageous.

Your business address should precisely and accurately describe your company's location. Don't use a PO box, shared address, or virtual office address as your company's address. This is against Google's guidelines and will, sooner or later, result in your company's Google presence being downgraded or removed entirely. If you deliver goods or services, check the box next to "I deliver goods and services to my customers at their location" and enter the distance from the premises you serve.

After clicking the 'Continue' button, you'll be prompted to validate your submission by having a postcard mailed to the business address you specified. You should receive a postcard within a week containing your unique personal identification number and activation instructions. You will add your business to Google My Business after receiving the postcard and following its instructions.
