What is Food Safety Tech and Why is it So Important

by Jacqueline Ruck Writer, Blogger

Food safety tech is the new buzzword in food production. It's a term that many people are hearing about but don't know what it means. This blog post will explore the meaning and importance of this emerging technology.

What is food technology?

Food technology is the study of the processes, practices, and systems employed in food production. This can include everything from farming to food service. It's important for consumers to be aware of the technologies used in these processes because this affects our safety and health when it comes to eating certain foods or drinks.

Example of places where food technology can be used;

Supermarkets

Some supermarkets have begun to introduce a system where they label foods with their country of origin. The idea behind this system is for consumers to be able to make an informed decision about the food they're buying.

Packaged Foods

Packaged food companies are beginning to label their products with 'use-by dates, which allow consumers to ensure that the product has been stored in a way that will ensure its safety.

Restaurants

Food safety technology can also be used in restaurants, so patrons can feel safe while dining out. This might include installing a thermometer near the grill areas, which tracks the temperature of the food being cooked and alerts staff when it's time to take it off the heat source.

Food Production

Food production is another industry that has seen a shift towards food safety technology. Some forward-thinking farmers are now beginning to install sensors in their livestock pens or chicken coops, so they can monitor the conditions and ensure the animals aren't stressed out or injured before slaughtering them for meat products. This ensures both humane treatment of livestock as well as increased food safety since sickly animals will produce less healthy meat.

What does this mean for consumers?

Consumers need to be aware that if there isn't any sort of labeling system on a product, it's impossible to know exactly what kind of processes were used in its creation. It might seem like common sense not to eat raw cookie dough off your spoon (if you didn't make it yourself), but many people don't realize that if the cookie dough is distributed at a grocery store, they may not know what kind of production methods were used to create it.

Why food safety matters

The way in which our food is produced can have an impact on both our health and well-being as consumers. When certain technologies are used during processing (such as pasteurization or irradiation), this can help ensure that we're eating safe foods with minimal risk for contamination from bacteria like salmonella or E coli. This reduces the chances of getting sick from your meal, so there's no reason not to take advantage of these new advances.

Food safety matters because it can impact both your health and the environment. By knowing how food is manufactured, you will be able to make more informed choices about which products are right for you. Keep an eye out for new food safety technology, and you'll be sure to have a safe meal every time.
