Today, the likes of DraftKings now allow you to choose your own team of fantasy MMA fighters, and as you’ll find out in this quick guide, it’s not as simple as picking the fighters whom you think would win at a certain event. For the purpose of this guide, we shall be talking you through some of the more important points of how to play this type of fantasy sports on DraftKings.

Everything begins with a pool of MMA fighters expected to take part at a certain event. For example, you would have had Jon Jones, Demetrious Johnson, and Anthony Pettis among the fighters in the pool for UFC 197. You will then pick from that list of fighters, choosing a total of five in hopes of accumulating the highest score by the time the event is over. And as we said earlier, it’s more than just choosing who has the best chance of winning, so it won’t be as simple as choosing Jones, for instance, due to his long winning streak, extended hiatus from MMA notwithstanding.

Scoring rules may vary depending on your daily fantasy provider, but for DraftKings, the service counts a half-point for a significant strike, one point for an advance, two points each for a takedown and a reversal/sweep, and three points for a knockdown. You also get bonuses based on the ending of the fight. If your fighter wins in the first round, they’ll earn you 100 points extra, but if he or she wins by decision, it’ll only be an additional 25 points for you.

But what about those inevitabilities of mixed martial arts? Events can get postponed to a later date, if not cancelled outright, and if an event is cancelled, everyone taking part in the fantasy tournament will get their entrance fees refunded. Postponed events may or may not remain live until their new scheduled date, though that will all depend on the fantasy sports service. And, as we’ve seen so often in the past, fighters can get injured ahead of their scheduled matches, and can be replaced by someone else on short notice. If that happens, replacement fighters can be added before the event starts – in DraftKings’ case, that’s 48 hours before the kickoff.

That’s MMA fantasy for you in a nutshell, and if you’re looking for the best chance of succeeding at it, it’s always a good idea to read up on the latest MMA news.
