While talking about sapphires, it becomes mandatory to discuss about the Ceylon sapphires. By Cylon sapphires, we mean those sapphires,which are being mined in Sri Lanka.  These sapphires are mostly untreated and look immensely attractive. The residents of this island have been mining this natural stone for thousand of years and it has become their primary occupation. Traders and tourist from around the world land in Sri Lanka to buy Ceylon blue sapphires . A Ceylon sapphire is also named as Padparadscha because its fascinating color displays the shape of lotus flower. And, Padparadscha sapphires are considered to be the most beautiful & valuable looking sapphires.

 

Sri Lanka located on the south coast of Indian ocean has been touted around the world for producing rich quality sapphires for at least 2000 years. In fact, Vasco De Gama and Marco Polo had praised Sri Lanka for having abundant sources of quality gems.

 

Sri Lanka is booked as the first country who started  performing heat treatment and other enhancement to alter the color and appearance of the stone. Now this technique has been used at worldwide to alter the color and shape of stones.

Color Varieties  of Ceylon Sapphires

A Ceylon blue sapphire displays vivid colors and shape. This stone naturally occurs in all colors and shades such as blue, yellow, pink, white, black and green. However, among all these colors, blue is regarded to be the most lucrative color. Today, almost all countries import large quantity of Ceylon blue sapphire from Sri Lanka. The gem & minerals have become an integral part of the Sri Lankan Economy.

 

Uses of Ceylon Sapphires:

 

These fabulous sapphires are widely being used for making ornaments. Apart from this, sapphires are quite durable in nature. Its hardness ranks 9.0 on the Mohs scale( A tool particularly being used to measure the hardness of the sapphire). Therefore, it can also be used in industrial & machinery works also.
