While talking about sapphires, it becomes mandatory to discuss about the Ceylon sapphires. By Cylon sapphires, we mean those sapphires,which are being mined in Sri Lanka. These sapphires are mostly untreated and look immensely attractive. The residents of this island have been mining this natural stone for thousand of years and it has become their primary occupation. A Ceylon sapphire is also named as Padparadscha because its fascinating color displays the shape of lotus flower. Sri Lanka located on the south coast of Indian ocean has been touted around the world for producing rich quality sapphires for at least 2000 years. In fact, Vasco De Gama and Marco Polo had praised Sri Lanka for having abundant sources of quality gems.

Its hardness ranks 9.0 on the Mohs scale( A tool particularly being used to measure the hardness of the sapphire). Therefore, it can also be used in industrial & machinery works also.
