What is AIS 140 rule by MoRTH India?

Now the Indian transport system is combined with the AIS140 GPS tracker device. Automotive Research Association of India has taken an initiative to build the transport system more transparent and to ensure public safety in India, take control of the entire commercial and public vehicle. The name of this initiative is the implementation of the AIS140 device in all commercial vehicles.

To improve public safety in public and commercial vehicles in critical parts of India the Government of India has mandated the AIS 140 is a set of requirements in all public transportation systems. The requirements have put both in OEMs and aftermarket players to bring more transparency in the transport system and also improve safety in all parts in the Indian mobility.

AIS 140 rule by MoRTH

  1. The device must be Global Navigation System (GNSS), and GAGAN -the Indian satellite-based augmentation system supportive than can acquiring information fast and rapidly.

  2. The device must have 4 digital, 2 analog and 1 serial communication system to assemblage external systems mean instance emergency request.

  3. The device must come with embedded SIM means no more plastic SIM card use in GPS tracker device and with e-SIM latch on two different networks.

  4. By using GSM/GPRS network, the device has to have the capability to transmit data to both, one the vehicle owner who uses the device for his vehicle and of course to the backend control server means government server with the accurate position, velocity and time along with the direction.

  5. This device is differentiating from the other basic GPS devices that it must have a panic button that transmits alert on pressing. It should transmit emergency alert two different configuration IP addresses as per the protocol.

  6. If in any area GSM and GPRS are not working properly so it unable to transmit data that time alerts are must be stored in the device and as soon as the network starts work properly the device must be able to send the information/alert on high priority to the configured addresses.

  7. The device needs to have an internal power backup of at least four hours of support for over the air (OTA) software and configuration update.

  8. Every device needs to have a unique identification number for identifying the device and data so that the government body can take quick action.

  9. The device needs to be anti-dust, temperature control, vibration, international protection solid and water and tamper-proof. 

  10. To maintain vehicle use and to extend the lifespan of the vehicle this device must be very compatible. Apart from the emergency alert, the device must transmit harsh acceleration and harsh breaking alert as it must have a three-axis accelerometer and three-axis gyroscope.

The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways stated that who should come under these norms and use the set of standards:

  • State road transport corporations.

  • Domestic bus operators.

  • Vehicles used for school, college, and various institutional vehicles and official pick-drop vehicles.

  • Vehicles used for rental purposes.

  • Ambulances and fire bridged and other emergency vehicles.
