What are the steps to mitigate radon from your house?

by Anna Rose Blogger

Radon is a kind of radioactive gas that you cannot detect using your senses because it has no smell, color, or tastes. This gas seeps up from the rocks rich in Uranium, found in places like Denver, and enters the living spaces. Thus, radon is commonly found in the low-lying points of the home, like basements. It can even find its way into the groundwater that people drink. Thus, mitigating radon from your house is an absolute necessity. Following are the steps you can take to mitigate radon from your home.

Getting the initial radon rating

The first step is to know where the radon levels are high and how high they are. You will need a radon detector for this purpose, which you can easily buy online or even offline. Get a good detector for long-term use, even if it seems a bit expensive because you will have to keep monitoring the radon levels.

Know the age of your home

The ideal fill for your home should be porous to let the gas breathe. You will be able to suck the air out easily in that case. The non-ideal fill is the one that is dense, and it gets usually found in houses built before the 1970s. It takes more effort to find out how to suck the air in case of old structures.

Understand the structure of your home

You need to understand the structure of your house before running a pipe through the roof, home, and foundation. The houses built on initial structures will have air pockets beneath it that would complicate the process of mitigation. If you do not have a drain tile or foundation slab for drawing out radon, you will have to drill through the foundation slab.

Planning about the pipe

You will need a PVC pipe about three to four inches in diameter to drill holes at different levels of the house. Run the pipe through the basement into the garage, and not from any well-frequented parts of the house. Take the pipe out from your roof in a way that it is at least ten feet away from any horizontal plane.

The placement of the fan

The fan has to be outside your living area for denver radon mitigation. You can keep it at the garage or in the attic to protect you from any leaks at the site of the fan. The fan will end up pulling the radon otherwise instead of expelling it.

Take the help of the professionals if all these steps feel like too much to handle for you. The professionals will bring their own tools and techniques to remove radon easily from your home.
