Some of the major rules of Texas Hold’em are:

  • Here one of the players acts as a dealer. This position is known as the button and after every hand, it rotates clockwise.
  • The two players sitting to the left of the dealer are known as the small blind and big blind, respectively.
  • These two positions require bets of a predetermined amount and they are the only players to put money in the pot before any cards are dealt.
  • Every player receives two cards face down. These are known as “hole” cards.
  • Once all hole cards have been dealt, the first round of betting begins with the player sitting to the left of the big blind. The player can fold, call or raise.
  • Then the betting continues clockwise, with each player having the option to fold, call the amount of the highest bet before him or her, bet or even raise.
  • When the first betting round is done, three community cards are flipped with face-up on the table. It is called the flop.
  • The betting resumes, clockwise, with players having the option to check (if there is no bet in front) to bet (or raise), call or fold.
  • When the second round of betting is done, a fourth community card is then flipped with the face-up on the table. This is known as the turn.
  • With the first remaining player the third round of betting commences, who is sitting to the left of the button.
  • When betting off the third round is over, a fifth community card is flipped with face-up on the table. This is known as the river.
  • With the first remaining players, who were sitting to the left of the button, the fourth round of betting starts. The betting moves clockwise.
  • When the first or second hole card is exposed with a misdeal result, the dealer retrieves, reshuffles, and recuts the cards.
  • If the flop has too many cards, it must be re-dealt.
