What Are The Causes Of Lateral Foot Pain?

by Jill Hunter Podiatry Paediatrics
The outside edges of your feet experience lateral foot discomfort. Standing, walking, and running can all be unpleasant. A variety of factors can induce lateral foot discomfort, ranging from excessive exercise to congenital abnormalities. To minimise further damage, it's better to let your footrest until you discover out what's causing it. Here are the major causes of lateral foot pain.

Stress fractures
Stress fractures, also known as hairline fractures, occur when microscopic cracks form in your bone as a result of overuse or repetitive actions. Regular fractures, on the other hand, are the result of a single incident. Stress fractures can be caused by intense activity or activities where your foot hits the ground often, such as tennis or basketball. Following foot pain treatments or tests can be carried out to determine the root cause of stress fractures.

Cuboid syndrome
A cuboid is a form of cube-shaped bone located in the centre of your foot's outside border. It links our foot to the ankle and gives stability. Cuboid syndrome occurs when the ligaments or joints around cuboid bone are injured or dislocated. Pain, weakness, and soreness around the border of your foot are symptoms of cuboid syndrome. When we stand on toes or twist our arches outward, the discomfort is generally more intense. When we stand or walk, the pain may spread to the remainder of our feet.

Peroneal tendonitis
The peroneal tendons extend from the calf back to the bases of your little and large toes, crossing across the outside border of your ankle. When the tendons become inflamed or swollen, peroneal tendonitis develops. This can be caused by overuse or ankle injury. Pain, weakness, and swelling immediately below or around the outer ankle are all symptoms of peroneal tendonitis. A popping feeling may also be felt in the region.

Arthritis
When the joint tissues become inflamed, you get arthritis. Inflammation is caused by ageing and past traumas in osteoarthritis (OA). Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a condition in which your immune system causes inflammation in your joints. Your foot has several joints, including those on the outside margins. Here are some major symptoms of this lateral foot pain:

  • Pain
  • Swelling
  • Redness
  • Stiffness
  • A crackling or popping sound

Lateral foot discomfort is prevalent, especially in persons who exercise or participate in sports on a daily basis. You should consult with professional podiatrists for proper foot pain treatment to get an early recovery.
