What are Logistics and Warehouse Automation?

by Pallavi Singh Digital Marketer

What is logistics automation?

Logistics automation refers to the use of technology to automate supply chain processes. This can include inventory management, order processing, and delivery. Logistics automation strives to boost efficiency, reduce costs, and improve overall performance. Logistics automation companies can improve their procedures and increase profitability by using proper automation technology.

What is warehouse automation?

Simply put, warehouse automation is the process of using machines, software, and technology to do warehousing and fulfilment tasks that were previously handled by humans.

In the rapidly changing world of e-commerce and global trade, the demand for speedy, error-free, and streamlined operations has made automation a must rather than a luxury.

As businesses aim for faster delivery times and more precise inventory management, automation develops as a vital tool for achieving these goals.

When we discuss automated warehouse systems, we are not referring to a specific technology or method. Warehouse Services: Before being transferred from one location to another, the cargo will most likely be held in one or more warehouses.

6 Types of Logistics Services You Should Know

1. Warehouse Services

Before being transferred from one location to another, the cargo will most likely be held in one or more warehouses. You can choose between an in-house warehouse (managed by the company) and the services offered by third-party logistics suppliers.

2. Third-Party Logistics Services (3PL)

3PL services connect manufacturers with consumers. They ensure that the quality of the products remains equal when they reach the consumer's location. Logistics companies will ensure that all parties engaged in the process fulfil their responsibilities, from the time cargo leaves a specific point until it arrives at the scheduled spot.

Other responsibilities could include customs clearance, storage, terminal operations, supply chain management, and so on. The advantage of 3PL over other services is that the logistics provider manages all shipping and transportation operations.

3. Freight shipping

These logistics services include the shipment of cargo using various modes of transportation, such as railways, ships, and trucks. It is mostly used for large-scale cargo shipments. Full truckloads (FTLs) are ideal for shipping huge loads because they can transport anything from two dozen to 26 pallets.
FTLs can also be used to transport large cargoes. Use less than truckloads (LTLs) for tiny loads (between a package and a truckload) so you can split the cost with other businesses.

In certain situations, moving cargo from ports to warehouses for storage may require road freight solutions.

4. Courier Shipping

When the term "shipping companies" is used, this is what comes to mind. These types of logistics services are ideal for transporting small orders, especially fragile materials that require extra attention.

Courier shipping requires less time than freight shipping. It is also more efficient to use the courier management system to deliver items directly from warehouses to customers. However, there are cases where the cost is higher.

5. In-House Logistics Services

In-house logistics could mean establishing a department within the organisation completely dedicated to logistical difficulties. The benefits of in-house logistics include more control over product movement and, in some situations, lower costs.

Types of Warehouse Automation

There are two types of warehouse automation, and knowing how they differ will help you decide which is best for your firm.

Physical Automation:

The use of robots and other mechanical devices, such as conveyor belts, to automate human
