What Are Foot Sprains & Strains?

by Jill Hunter Podiatry Paediatrics

Sprains can also occur at the knee from pivoting, at the wrist from falls, and from accidents or collisions. Sprains can occur at any joint and result in the ligaments becoming stretched. A sprain can range from mild to severe. In severe cases, the ligament can actually rupture, causing tissue damage and complete instability of the joint.

Strains:

Strains are caused by too much force on a muscle. They often occur during weight-bearing activities which cause the muscles to stretch. Recurring motions, overuse of muscles, working beyond physical ability are the main reason behind muscle straining. Strains are also known as pulled muscles and range from mild to severe conditions. Single time accidents can cause acute strains while repetitive activities can cause chronic strains.

Treatment:

Doctors advise the RICE treatment for these injuries. RICE is the acronym for rest, ice, compression and elevation. Over-the-counter medication for pain relief and inflammation reduction cane be helpful. Some creams and pain relieving gels or sprays can also be used to alleviate the injury.

Sprains and strains can both refrain you from physical activity until proper recovery. Staying cautious and protecting feet region after receiving injury may speed up the recovery process. Returning to physical activity post recovery is another thing which requires cautiousness.
